i'm wondering if the lyrics would be viewed significantly differently if it weren't for Richey's disappearance after this record
i'm not saying they don't stand up on their own merits, they clearly do, but they became almost evidence for investigation after that, and the whole thing practically became some kind of twisted autobiography
similar to In Utero, i guess

Nah everyone shite themselves over this back in the day, pre-disappearance.
Well I say everyone it was mostly the sackless pre-emo lot.

yeah honestly the disappearance has nothing to do with my enjoyment of this

I do think Richey's disappearance influenced the general public perception of this record, although it obviously depends on retrospect & when you first listened/what you were aware of at that time. I had no idea about Richey when I first got into the Manics, I was old enough to know (think I started with Everything Must Go, actually) but wasn't aware of Richey's story initially.

Hey guys which version of this album you prefer? The original UK or US remix
I'm personally used to the US so I'm always shocked by the raw production qualities of the original (and also how much more consistently audible the bass is on the original)

I've never heard the re-release, didn't even know it was a thing... when was it released? Is it that 10 year anniversary one?

The 20th anniversary edition iirc is the only release to have the US remix
It's still up on YouTube but I think it only exists as a playlist now, the full album video may have gotten taken down. Also I think the videos are blocked everywhere but the United States (go figure)

Oh right, so that's last few years then... definitely not heard it. Vaguely curious, although it'd be weird hearing a different version after all this time.

I hate the US version. Completely misses the point of the album, sonically, and sort of destroys songs like Yes altogether making them sound overtly "stadium-ready" instead of tight and angry like the original mix

Paying much more attention to the music I'm surprised by the amount of odd time signatures and sharp changes in tempo that show up. Like I can't wrap my head around Yes and Archives of Pain. Surely the result of having to write music around the melody-less lyrics
Ok I think most of these songs doodle with 3/4. Like This is Yesterday is initially in 3/4 and once it reaches the guitar solo it goes back and forth between 3/4 and 4/4. Opening of PCP also seems to alternate between 3/4 and 4/4 but once the power chords start playing I'm just lost

the fuck? neither of those things are true lol
This is Yesterday is 4/4 throughout and PCP just speeds up once everything comes in

I think White America has a 3/4 bit tho
like, literally 3/4 (a.k.a. "waltz time") not just 6/8 being called 3/4 like people will do sometimes

It goes 3/4 into 4/4 before going plink plink plink plonk plonk jangle.
4Real.

Alright well that was still helpful thanks lol
If you have the US mix then Yes should be about 5:15 long
