I saw an interview with the band where they claimed they were naive when they wrote the old stuff, and that it was too difficult to pull off live on a consistent basis due to over-layering etc. I guess that makes a certain amount of sense, but it sent them in a direction that caused the quality of the tunes to decline pretty rapidly.

I understand where they are coming from, however, I saw this band on their Clayman tour, and every single song blew my teenage mind. They had no problem completely nailing every harmony, and Anders sounded phenomenal. You can't jump around as much, and you have to prepare a lot more for a set, but the end result was definitely worth it.

Lol if they think their new material is anything worth listening to then they are even more naive now

Damn Dungeon, that must have been the ideal In Flames show. I'd imagine they had the perfect setlist at that time, since they hadn't released anything bad/mediocre yet. Did they play anything from Lunar Strain and Subterranean?

Dude, it was awesome. Off the top of my head, they played Stand Ablaze, Episode 666, Gyroscope, Bullet Ride, Pinball Map, Embody the Invisible, Behind Space, and the encore was Colony.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure they didn't play anything off of Jester Race. It was mostly Whoracle through Clayman and it was awesome. Met Jesper and Daniel both just chillin on a couch drinking beers and struggling to understand what I was saying, but they just kept nodding their heads and smiling.
and also Bjorn was wearing bell bottoms.

Whoa, Behind Space AND Stand Ablaze? You're a very lucky man. I've seen then 6 times I think and I've only seen one song from TJR, two from Whoracle, and three from Colony. Which is quite sad when you think about it.

That is sad man, I saw them years later during the Soundtrack/Reroute to Remain era, and while they did play some of the hits, I think they played Jotun and a couple songs off of Clayman, it was mostly new stuff. They sounded really tight as a band, but the magic was missing. They came through town last year and I stayed home.

If they put on a good show I might be tempted to go see them at some point whenever they happen to be playing near me, but the lack of quality songs would be a big drawback nonetheless. Which means I probably won't be attending any of their concerts ever.
Why are they doing this to themselves?

tfw they'll never do a tjr/whoracle/colony/clayman anniversary tour ;_;

I would too tbh

Everyone's gotta eat.
But I don't think money is the sole reason why the last one sucks. They tried to widen their audience and lost themselves in the process.

nah they're in the process of simply alienating their existing fanbase, rather than widening it. obviously guys like inflameswethrash666 are gonna like everything they do but generally those who once dug the band have turned to hate them
|
| |
Yeah if they wanted to 'widen' their fanbase they should've gone electronic
