I have not knowingly heard a Mazzy Star song or album.

Chemtrails is frustrating because it flashes intrigue (the raspier vocals in White Dress, the entire t/t, the melodic swell in Wild at Heart, the piano teases in Dark But Just a Game, the country inflection in Breaking Up Slowly, and harmonies/duets with Zella Day and Weyes Blood in the closer), yet ultimately none of it meshes in any sort of cohesive way, the lyrics are god awful even for her, and the aforementioned moments of intrigue rarely max out their potential, as if she intentionally backs off of anything too bold because she's afraid of alienating her fanbase and altering this very specific vision/sound that she's been pushing over the course of her entire career. NFR! succeeded not because it departed from her norm, but because it was the full realization of everything she used to aim for and miss (a full album of quality songs that are mesmerizing, detached, and vaguely idealistic). This one feels like a half-hearted attempt at doing something more with her career - which absolutely should be the move after making a magnum opus you can't top - but then she simply rolls over and relies on the formula again. It's not bad, it's very pretty, but it's absolutely frustrating. Also, did I mention how bad the lyrics are? Deserves to be said twice.

Her sound is super enthralling for like 3 songs and then it runs dry. Leaves you feeling like she has a single trick and it's exactly that - a trick.
