But like I said before... I think this could've worked out better if Matt was more active in it.

For sure, & it's extra disappointing that his melodies are a step down too. If he beefed up his contributions, cut the vocal interludes, lose a couple of the worst songs, and make it the music video version of Hairpin Turns, this could be an easy 8.5/10 album.

Not only his melodies, but his bizarre wittiness brought a sense of humor to their collective depression. It elevated it. This album is kind of sad and flat without it. There's still a sense of ~prettiness~, but it doesn't seem to be enough.

I really think his left-handed wit kept them sailing. As you can see with this album, how they threw that anchor overboard.

Has anyone else resequenced this album yet? It's much better if you rip some tracks out imo:
1. Rylan
2. Quiet Light
3. Oblivions
4. The Pull of You
5. I Am Easy to Find
6. Where Is Her Head
7. Not in Kansas
8. Her Father in the Pool
9. Hairpin Turns
10. So Far So Fast
11. Light Years

The lack of Matt is a serious issue for me with this album.
Going to see them next month. Hoping we get a decent set list.

just listen to quiet light, where is her head, and rylan, then pop one of their good albums on

'just listen to quiet light, where is her head, and rylan, then pop one of their good albums on' (2)
Good strategy.

Where is her head is great ya, song might last a full minute too long but it's still brilliant

That's the story for a lot of this, sadly lol

Yeah album definitely didnt need to be 60+ mins but I suppose it's better to have too much content from a band like this than too little in the long run

I actually never noticed that the album had such a high runtime. The only thing I ever skip here are the interludes. They kill the flow. Also, I might get a bit of heat for this but having delved deeper into the record, I completely disapprove the decision to have so many gueat singers here. Some of the lyrics here would have killed with Matt's vocals. I feel it's the most personal the writing has been since HV.

That said, Oblivions is still SOTY for me.

Say what you will for the rest of this but “Quiet Light” and “Light Years” are really creeping their way up my list of favorite National songs.

There are no doubt some killer tracks. But man, The Pull of You is probably the most frustrating tune of all for me. It has the elements in place to be one of their great songs - check out 'Sometimes I Don't Think' played live on YouTube, an old version where they repeat the chorus and just generally jam on it more...no spoken word antics etc. Probably the lowlight of the record for me despite initially loving it haha.

Both spoken word bits have grown off me, they could've been executed much better to be less grating overall I think. Rest of the song is really good though.
