I mean, I was raised a devout catholic, became an even more devout protestant and was on the road to becoming a pastor before I suddenly lost my faith - which caused a great deal of distress and was probably the best thing to ever happen to me. I certainly was discriminatory of homosexuality when I was a practicing christian, and then when I deconverted I started hanging out with actual real-life gay people, and discovered that if anyone ever deserved to get married, these people do, because they're the nicest fucking people ever.
(Well, except for Vincent, he was a bit bitchy, but he was president of the SGA, he was up to big things, probably was allowed to be bitchy.)
Anyway, point is, I've read the new testament since then (along with the Torah, Quran, sacred works of the east, etc. One of the best parts of deconverting was the ability to expand my scope and explore spirituality openly) and I've found the moral teachings of Jesus just as beautiful, but I can no longer find a single reason why that love and acceptance taught shouldn't apply just as bountifully to our brothers and sister of alternative sexualities. It's the religious culture that teaches this discrimination, the scriptures have no clear message.
People who find themselves morally outraged because someone prefers a different hole than they do at night live in sad and small worlds, and have missed the point entirely.

pretty much agree with that, for me, I just choose to neither support nor object homosexuality to save myself from stereotypical grouping, yet that still continues to happen regardless, sadly. But like I said, I'm not entirely surprised why people do group such ideas.

The bottom line for me is that the Bible teaches Christians to love everyone, including those with whom they disagree. Hell, it even tells them to love their enemies. It also says that judgment is reserved for God, not the people. Whenever I find myself getting swept up in social or political debates, I try to keep in mind that the burden of judgment was not meant to be ours. Love each other, and that's it.

100% Sowing. May not agree with everything about homosexuality or any other sort of pressing issues society has to offer, but that doesn't make me love people any less. Sure, I fall short of that sometimes, but ultimately, I just have to remind myself about that.

For me, if there is such a thing as sin, it is purposeful actions that harm others. The love and devotion shown between a romantic couple is the utter opposite of that and one of the most pristine examples of the love encouraged by christian scripture. The genders involved are irrelevant.

It's no better or worse to assume a Christian hates gays than it is to make assumptions about other people based on race or sexual preference
To be fair, and I hope this statement is true from our experience, it’s simply not so in mine. While I do know plenty of Christians who are accepting, in my personal experience almost everybody I know who is not accepting (generally, but particularly of homosexuals) is stronglyChristian/some religious denomination. I meant the original comment mostly as a joke/just to get a reaction but there is truth to it and it wasn’t a totally judgmental/inappropriate question to ask (not inherently, at least)

For a more serious question though, to the extent that this band is actually Christian, is it in a preachy way, or just happening to use Christian themes to convey more universal concepts?

the latter, there are definitely Christian themes mentioned, but not in an overtly preachy way as you would find on CCM radio or something like that

And more generally, though I kind of asked this before, is this band worth checking for me? The post-hardcore tag is what make me kind of hesitant. Plus the fact that it’s Sputcore.

Ok if it’s the latter I could maybe get behind it, I’m as staunch an atheist as they come but I can appreciate religious themes.

"Plus the fact that it's Sputcore."
so for me, I generally don't like the stuff that Sputnik drools over, but mewithoutYou is an exception for me. I was also hesitant at first because of the praise it got on Sputnik (because of experience with some previous albums) but they were worth checking out. Easily AOTY for me so far.

Boney it wouldn't hurt to just spin a few of the highly hyped tracks from this album. They take some time to grow in my experience, but you'll still get an idea of whether or not it's something you could eventually get behind.
I think, from this album, 'Julia' and 'Another Head for Hydra' are easy starting points as they're the lead singles. There are also amazing songs from their other albums (particularly Brother, Sister and Catch For Us The Foxes) that are well worth investigating.

If you really want a song worth checking out, listen to "Rainbow Signs"

@Boney: there’s a great number of narrow minded people who discriminate against others, often through fear. Most of the ones I’m aware of personally don’t identify with any religion & they’re also likely to discriminate based on faith, as well as a number of other things.
Anyway, this album is actually quite good, well done Sput hype machine. Never heard these guys before & I’m still getting my head around it as a whole but mostly positive about it so far. Winter Solstice is a jam.

honestly, just go with Sowings mixtape, it's the best way to get into the band, then ease yourself into the albums

Yeah, Boney, I'm a godless man, but Aaron Weiss' musings are still super interesting to me. He's my favorite lyricist.

Just a disclaimer though: their earlier recordings were pretty rough (A:B Life) but get better. Also, every album has a pretty distinct sound so if you try the first song on one of the releases and hate it, don't dismiss everything else.

and another disclaimer, it takes quite a while to get into their albums. I still haven't gotten into A:B Life or Catch for Us the Foxes yet because I've been too busy delving into their other releases, it's quite interesting actually.
