album is a nesting doll of porcupine dung..

I'm basing 80% of that statement on context..

If there was no such thing as objective goodness professional studio musicians wouldn’t exist though

Are technical guitarists not technically talented?

Yeah but whether you like it, whether that technical talent is "good", is contingent on subjective opinions/processes

Damn that makes a lot of sense thanks

I will say that on this record there seems attacks against the traditional listening experience, like all the banging around going on at the end of ivy, or the way white Ferrari clips in, or frank being pitched up in Nike’s, just massive fuck yous to someone (like me) who’d love to hear a more straightforward version of the same song.

nights would be soooooooo much better if he chopped off the whole first minute [2]

" why do you need to know the context or anything other than the exact sounds he puts on the record?"

Because context can completely change how you respond to certain songs for the better. The whole context vs music argument has been done to death here and is going to differ from person to person.

"I’d argue that most of not all music should be"

Yes because all music should be judged by the same measuring stick...not. Pretty much the only way I can see anyone to think that is to have more 'confidence' in their opinions through a hollow 'it's more objectively true' to an subjective art form. Like for example listening to Carrie and Lowell without the lyrics and context would diminish the album a lot.

"Are technical guitarists not technically talented?"

They're seen as objectively talented based on the amount of time they spent on their instrument and physical acheivements. That is far easier to objectively quantify than someone's enjoyment of art.
