shows how solid a band is when their misfires are still great

"I believe the original split - outside of jon's facebook comments - were that jon always wanted to make the band larger, go worldwide, etc. but don and jacob didn't have the time for it, especially don who was working as a professor at the time"
Was this mentioned somewhere? That doesn't make sense to me considering Jon said he had been feeling uninspired and like he was going through the motions (which would explain how this album turned out). Sounded like he was kind of ready to be done with it anyways by the time they split.

definitely would love a new one. this one gets a bit too much hate, it is definitely their weakest outing, but a goated band can only make good albums nonetheless

i'd bet my left nut they're working on new material. doubt it'll be soon, but it'll definitely happen.

Listening to this new and honestly the hate for this was way overblown, even on my part. This is pretty great.

I didnt hate it, it has its moments, I just found it underwhelming. I want to give it another shot though, I've left it out of discography runs for Agalloch for a long time.

It's by far the "least" impressive album they've done, but its still a great atmospheric bm album. Opener is one of my fav songs of theirs.

wish i was on the same page but except for maybe two tracks i really don't like this album. it feels so drab.

It's definitely not on the level of the 4 that came before it, but I love the atmosphere. It's hard to follow-up one absolute classic album, let alone 4 of them lol. Feel like they just started running out of steam a bit.

I agree it’s their least impressive but it’s very approachable as a metal record and is very fun. I just finished binging this band and I think my ranking is The Mantle>Marrow>PF>Ashes>this

Yeah if Ashes was already your least fave, then I can see how this one would resonate less as that's the album it's most stylistically similar to out of their classics imo
Ashes and Mantle are both 5s for me and I've also loved this one almost since when it first dropped (it took a few initial listens to grow on me)

"Feel like they just started running out of steam a bit."
yeah definitely. i 100% expect them to create again and i'm extremely excited cus they've had (and currently have) the chance to take their time in crafting it.
tbh my 'favourite' agalloch album is tough cus i have emotional connections to all of them for different reasons. if a gun was held to my head i'd say pale folklore but that isn't necessarily due to quality.

Pale Folklore is definitely my fav for sentimental reasons, but you can't go wrong obviously.

I love Ashes but it’s just doesn’t HIT in the way the other three do. It’s the one with the least amount of folk so I guess that’s why to me.

Ashes used to be my fav, but now it's fourth for me. Still a 4.7 though lmao.

These days, I find myself coming back to this more often than Ashes, The Mantle, and Pale Folklore. They're better albums, but there's something about the atmosphere on this one. Love the hell out of the Musk Ox interludes too.

Think Ashes might be my favorite these days.
