Mmm, perhaps "superficial" was a poor choice of words, I wasn't trying to imply any kind of disingenuity or ulterior motive on the band's part. Just saying both bands got major-label backing and success for similar reason- they were angsty and brooding in a very marketable, broad-appeal way. I don't doubt PJ paid their dues but I also don't think that was really key to why they got big.

I have to disagree there.
The band progressed as a result of what was seized upon later not the other way around.
This only became successful and rode the wave post the Nirvana boom.
The whole thing wasn’t engineered either, it was amalgamated, packaged and sold back.

Pearl Jam would have still existed had they only ever become as successful as say, the Melvins or Mudhoney. Many bands in similar scenes stayed that level and continued for their fanbase and genuinely for the music.
My Chemical Romance were groomed for success with MTV fully established etc and only make sense as a hugely commercial enterprise selling thousands of albums to teens - there would be no other reason for them to exist

I used to think Pearl Jam were better than nirvana as a kid lol but now I see the error of my ways. (Nirvana rule and) this band sucks, man, it’s completely undigestible stadium garbagio to me. This album isn’t so bad I guess but bleh Pearl Jam
Love MCR though

>If you think Pearl Jam's angst was any less market-tested and superficial then MCR's was then I suggest you remove your nostalgia goggles.
Oh yeah? And how about you remove that steel bar lodged in your brain?

I really don't see how my chem were "groomed for success" any more than any other band that gets picked up by a major label, and if any band benefited from MTV it was pearl jam, who got big well before MTV's cultural stock plummeted in the early 2000s. Obviously I can't speak to whether or not MCR would have ended up being indie lifers if not for the fame, I'll concede it seems unlikely but who really knows.

what's a mid level band on the level of Mudhoney in the genre/style of My Chemical Romance? - I guess they could exist and continue playing into their fifties, just can't imagine it looking or sounding at all good if so
|

Oh I definitely agree that emo ages a lot less gracefully than grunge lol. As for mid-level emo/post hardcore bands- idk, Thrice, Finch and Senses Fail are all comparable I suppose, though I'm not super into that scene so I may have a skewed view of how big they really are

Stormheart you literally joined in 2019 so you have zero context about any of this.
I joined this site when I was a stupid 12 year old and thus had undying devotion to those mediocre bands like any stupid 12 year old did. But now I'm so much better than that and I need to prove myself as part of the musical elite.
