Idk guys according to the band they're a progressive technical "adult-contemporary" death metal band. Or at least that's what they said when they made Colors. Also they don't chug enough to be a deathcore band.

When you transition from blast beats into banjo riffs it's more of an act of having a fun side. It's usually required to take things too seriously in order to come off as pretentious.
Also at least no one pulled a Fantano and said they were a metalcore band.

I guess I should have said that Colors was the adult-contemp PDM work and not their whole discog. If you've ever met the band or at least seen some of their studio docs online you can see that they're a pretty jokey bunch of guys who also happen to be good with their instruments. Any idiosyncrasies portrayed by the band doesn't come off as pretentious to me but maybe because of the context being set for the listener. IDK At least they're not Liturgy where, as much as I love their material, Triple H just baffles me on occasion.
