For a time, but I would blame that more on nu-metal (once again, only for a time).

"black album killed metal and this album put the nails in the coffin"

Completely agree in terms of ~mainstream~ metal, although I'd throw Vulgar Display of Power in there as well... those albums dropped 20-25 years ago and bands are still aping them

metal has never been mainstream, and metallica never broke metal into the mainstream. sure, metallica themselves went mainstream, but the genre of metal never went with them. even though megadeth, anthrax, exodus, destruction, and even death metal bands like massacre, massacra, and entombed went hard rock and tried to grasp that mainstream radio success, metallica was literally the ONLY metal band to achieve it. there's a reason why top40 chart lovers know Metallica but have literally never even heard of anthrax, slayer, or even megadeth.

Did you miss the late 90s and MTV?

yes but simple research shows that metallica's success was more than that of any other metal band by at least 50x.

"Black album killed metal"

right, that's why there haven't been any metal albums since 1991.

I think the black album took hard rock and heavy metal to the highest pedestal possible as far as commercial success is concerned (literally the best selling record since 1991) before it turned into a trend of copycatting Metallica and Pantera until both genres died out of the mainstream. It's a shame because the black album is a great record and shits on Panterrible.

What??? Great Southern Trendkill is fucking awesome. Bench press to War Nerve and come back to me when your sex life increases by a thousand. You can't hate Pantera. It's un-masculine.
