"I think agnosticism is the way to god. I've been called a pussy by atheists saying I just don't want to commit, but I think it's just as arrogant to outright claim there is no god, as it is for christians to outright claim there is a god."

I don't think so. like I said earlier, christians have no definitive proof that god exists, but yet scientists can't prove that he doesn't (a fallacy to a degree but nonetheless). so with that, no one can be completely sure. if there is a god (still doubt it), then in my opinion, he is most like that of the deist's idea of religion - god created the world, but he left us alone a long time ago, for us to do upon our "free will".

Yea, it'd be the institution for me as well, and any notion that god is the god we think he is based off of any religious texts we have. I think both sides just happen to think they are better than the other side, based on their beliefs.

It's an unfair onus to place on atheists, but to me, atheists are supposed to be more rational so it is a bit perplexing to me to see such condescending remarks coming from them. I know it can be difficult to have a constructive conversation with someone of strong religious beliefs, but it's no reason to turn to all the ad hominem attacks you generally see on the web. It just makes the atheist seem as ignorant as the Christian. If one believes there is no god, but has absolutely no basis for why he/she believes that, other than the fact he/she was taught there is no god, they have no business telling christians off.

the problem I have (and I'm sure, many others) with christians isn't the idea of god himself, it's the institution, the

hypocrisy, the abuse. very much like martin luther's problem with the catholic church when he started the protestant

reformation.

this is my issue with humanity though, i feel far too partial likening it exclusively to a certain religious group

I suppose I am being too harsh on Christians and unfairly targeting the aggressive and vocal bunch than the moderates. It must be very difficult to be a moderate Christian and actually get taken seriously or even manage to get a large enough following to be noticed.

But Dennis, so many atheists I know (myself included) we're raised to believe that there was a god by their family and either

now resent it or just simply don't care.

Religion in the western world should be obsolete in a couple generations. The Internet is a real game changer, something that should keep us from continuing to remake the mistakes we made in history. We just have to teach people not to fall so easily for rhetoric. Rhetoric = used to rally the uneducated masses to dumb causes/beliefs, mainly in religion and politics.

@cyg yah, i grew up in Korea with a Korean mother, so I was a fairly pious christian until I moved to the states and lived on my own. Sputnik is actually what caused me to hop over the fence to atheism/agnosticism, because I was actually writing out what I believe, and then thinking "wow, do i actually believe this bullshit..." It's really difficult confronting your own beliefs.

"People want to be lead and it's very comforting to think that you have an all knowing, all powerful being looking after you." makes sense. It's also probably a very comforting feeling for religious folks to think that this life isn't the end, and that something better awaits them.

Interestingly, there is a 'god' gene only found in humans. Worship comes naturally to humans as seen when primitive islands received masses of provisions by American planes, 20 years later, the people of the island would come to worship numerous religions based on planes (gods) flying through the sky and gracing them with free food.

Religion was likely a beneficial trait in evolution because it gave us further reason to live and comforted us with a sense of stability in a constantly unstable environment.

That's getting into a rewards-based theology right there, which immediately I'm not a fan of because there's nothing more shit-yourself scary to me than the thought an after-life.

I don't want to go there. I like this messed-up, painful and beautiful world.

Even I have to admit that it's really unfathomable for me to perceive what death is going to be like. I mean, we've all been asleep before, but to stretch that to eternity is something that is just not understandable for me as a being of conscience.

Afterlife is a funny subject to me because I probably shouldn't believe in one at all, but I had a few ghostly encounters when I was younger than I never shook off. The idea of ghosts and spirits had interested me since then, but many theories regarding ghosts are surprisingly nonreligious in nature (though still very much superstitious, of course).

What does eternal life even mean? Will there be music? We don't have ears anymore sine were dead, sound passes through gas much differently than through solids.

After studying psychology, I find that the brain is way too damn physical in order for any notion of an afterlife to work. One chunk of your brain goes off, bam, you're a completely different person. With none of your brain left after you die, who's to say that you'll even be you in the afterlife.
