It's cool to hear that Camel still sounds like Camel. Andrew is the pillar of the band, and if he's still able to play the guitar like he does in Camel albums, it's a bonus to be tempted to see them live. Lucky you e21, mate.

Yeah he's a part of Camel's sonorities, but I think Andrew is the main songwriter, and his guitar playing is inimitable. Without him, Camel wouldn't be the same anymore.

"You're right Nag. The acoustic guitar is so identical, it's obviously intentional. I'm not an Opeth expert, but they probably sound a bit like Camel elsewhere. Considering Mikael's love for Camel, it's more like a nod and a wink (no pun intended) to the band."

Benighted is absolutely intentional, Mikael is an avid record collector. The track Epilogue off the album prior to Benighted's one sounds like Pink Floyd for instance. Furthermore, the second song off Morningrise (the 2nd studio album) has an acoustic section that sounds like Renaissance.

It shows that Mikael is into prog of the 70s indeed. Thanks for these obvious examples, Sab. I'm sure there is still more ;)

"Andrew is the pillar of the band"

"That was Peter"

Both were the pillarsand both were also one of the best duo of composers in the prog rock world. Sincerely, I felt very much the absence of Bardens in the band. Still, I agree with Jethro. Latimer always was the soul of Camel. Besides, his guitar playing is unique, besides many similarities with the guitar style of Gilmour. I always felt that.

Of course it is. Akerfeldt always said that Camel was one his main inspirations and Latimer one of his guitar heroes. Besides, Steven Wilson is another great fan of Camel and Latimer. He even said that he is very interested in re-released all the discograhy of Camel. I would not be surprised if I should know that both were see one of the shows of this live tour.

I think that Steve Rothery (Marillion) is closer to Gilmour sounding. Both are more strident than Latimer who is softer (almost acoustic sounding like Pat Metheny for instance) and more melodic.

i'm not sure about Bardens credits compositionwise. He surely penned his keyboards patterns and some songs as well. I'm pretty sure that Latimer is responsible of most of the songwriting and the arrangements.

Edit; According to Wikipedia, Bardens wrote songs with Latimer.

One thing is sure, there are a multitude of great classic Camel material post-Bardens (1979 to 2002), which proves that Latimer played a prominent role in the songwriting department.

@ Moto

You're completely wrong, dude. The four albums released in the 90's are all great stuff. They are almost as good as their four first albums. Besides that, in the 80's, they released two very good albums, "Nude" and "Stationary Traveller".

Since I think you're Japanese, maybe you're interested particularly in "Nude". It tell us the story of a Japanese soldier who is separated on a Pacific island of his unit during WW2, who survived alone during 29 years, on the Philippines island of Lubang until 1974, not knowing that the war had ended. However, finally he was persuaded that the war had over, after his former Japanese commanding officer fly over the island and talk with him, persuading him to surrender. After that, he has been received in his home as a hero. However, he no longer manages to get along in the daily life and thus he finally disappeared by boat, returning to his island, the place he knew so well. Musically, I think the album is an excellent prog album of the 80's, one of the best.

If you want, you can check my review about that album.

Cheers.
