Panopticon has So Did We, which I believe to be one of their best songs.
But this album, musically and conceptually, is just perfection.

I hope you grabbed the remastered versions of the first 3 LPs, they did make a difference

I spent about two weeks on this and Panop before checking the rest. They're both growers, though this is somewhat more immediate.

Oceanic is less polished and has very expansive, bass heavy sound. Panopticon is more intricate, but has lesser emotional impact.

I was with you until the last bit. Panopticon is more cerebral, while this is more...instinctual? It's like, this album is an unstoppable force of nature, but the next one is a calculated, intricate, human experience. They are complementary pieces that are greater because of it -- this was the seismic event, and Panopticon was its equal and opposite reaction.

very well said. then absence takes the intricacies to the next level
instinctual is definitely an apt descriptor for this too
this has almost unmatched replay value imo

yeah I guess that's the more popular opinion since panopticon's avg is higher.

I still change my mind occasionally. "The Beginning and the End" and "Carry" are superlative songs, but Panopticon has the better second half.

Opeth is pretty good from the start. At least MAYH through Ghost Reveries.

lot of prog seem to follow the pattern of starting out fairly lackluster then discovering their signature sound and experimenting over the next few albums until they reach a peak bout 3-5 albums into their careers whereupon they start to stagnate/become complacent with burst of gold here and there but usually as individual tracks not albums

Mastodon too, but Emperor was a nice recovery.
