Whatever floats your boat, DOTF. Personally, the three bands in question go hand in hand for me but I definitely like Isis the best followed by Neurosis and finally CoL not too far behind.

cult of luna don't feel as natural as isis, they seem more methodical and formulaic but still good

yeah CoL come across as if they're following some post metal blueprint

I think for me personally, Isis is the most easiest to digest for newcomers into the world of post-metal or whatever you want to call it. And yeah, they ebb and flow really great. Ironically enough, they were the last of the “big three” in that style I came across.
I heard Neurosis first in freshman year of college, and while I liked it, it was a bit too much for me to take in at the time. CoL I came across by chance not too long afterwards when they co-headlined w/Katatonia during a short US tour in 2013 and they too left me overwhelmed at first. Then a few months later I bought Celestial on a whim at a record store that closed shortly afterwards thinking “I’m gonna go into this with no context whatsoever and if I don’t like it, I’m gonna force myself to like it somehow.” IDK why, but the first time I played through that album, it immediately clicked with me.

The reason is because Celestial is fucking awesome
Cult of Luna is boring. In fact most post-metal is boring

Only post-metal I jam other than Isis or Neurosis is the first three Mouth of the Architect albums.

“The reason is because Celestial is fucking awesome”
Well there’s no disputing that.
“In fact most post-metal is boring”
Well...aside from the big three, Amenra, Rosetta, Intronaut are the only bands who’ve been labeled post-metal I’ve enjoyed...at least so far. Though I highly question whether Intronaut should even be considered post-metal cause they sound more like a sludge/prog metal fusion band. I’d throw SUMAC and Old Man Gloom in there as well cause I also love Aaron Turner’s non-Isis projects but again...I wouldn’t consider those two post-metal either.

jester have you checked Godflesh?

Actually I forgot to mention Rosetta but that’s probably because I haven’t liked anything after Anaesthete. Intronaut’s dinosaur album is really good. I love Sumac and Old Man Gloom but like you said Acme, not really post-metal. Trenches’ The Tide Will Swallow Is Whole is pretty good too.
Ocean it’s been awhile since I checked them out but I had Streetcleaner at one point. Wouldn’t they be more industrial?

"first three Mouth of the Architect albums."
THANK YOU. Ties and Quietly are some of the best post-metal albums out there.

Evok yea dude those rule. I didn’t like the stuff after that, apparently they got a new guitarist and vocalist who had a different writing style. BUT a recent Facebook post said that he left and the old guy came back, so maybe we’ll get some more along the lines of the early stuff again.

I've heard Quietly (even rated it a 4 too) myself actually, but that's the only Mouth Of The Architect I know.
As for Godflesh, as jester pointed out, they're a full on industrial metal band. However, I can make a decent argument for their second album Pure setting the tone for what eventually became post-metal along with Neurosis' Souls At Zero. Both were released in '92 when post-metal wasn't solidified as its own genre yet. It's very subtle, but I can hear how the guitars sort of ring out in a glacier like way on Pure would influence the sounds and riffs on an album such as Celestial.

CoL are not ‘formulaic’ as every one of their albums has a different sound, how can they just be following a ‘post-metal blueprint’... whatever that means.
Salvation has a lot more ambient/quieter passages & concentrates more on atmosphere rather than punishing heaviness whereas The Beyond represents the heavier side of the spectrum. Eternal Kingdom is quirky & has a darker more experimental side, then there’s the colaboration with Julie which is again completely different due to the added vocal dimension.
These are just examples but I’d argue that unless you only listened to CoL very fleetingly, then it’s only the first 2 albums that sound that similar, where The Beyond was a more cohesive follow-up to an already established formula.
