"Do y'all think they will do a 20th anniversary tour for this next year?"

would be cool but I also don't think this current lineup could do Cassandra justice unless they expanded to have a dedicated brass/winds player like Adrian was. Probably my biggest issue with their current live setup is there's next to none of that in songs that originally had it.

I wish they’d link back up with Jon Theodore but I’m assuming there’s bad blood there even though they have said on the record they never shouldn’t gotten rid of him

I think it's more that JT has moved on (and has a better gig drumming for Queens of the Stone Age, even if I think he's wasted on them).

Jon Theodore drumming for QOTSA is like the definition of overqualification

Preach. It's like those rich assholes that buy a Koenigsegg or Pagani and then never drive it.

Could never get into Amputechture. But agreed on this one. This and Goliath are peak for me. I think the new one is their best since Goliath though

Mannn demon you’re like the only other person I’ve seen say they love amp. Not sure why that one turns people away compared to this

Everything up to Octahedron ranges from mint to very good, Nocto is whatever, s/t is not good outside of Blacklight Shine, and the new one is very okay but also is pretty nondescript. There's a great 10 minute song hiding somewhere in that album, but they chose to make it a 49 minute suite that takes half of the runtime to really get anywhere, which is funny because that was always the critique people would throw their way back in the day and now it's legitimately true. (Amputechture is great btw, but is carried hard by Tetra and Baphomets, although Asilos Magdalena is a fantastic ballad).

Eh, I think that applies to their old stuff too tbh, but it’s fs a lot more pronounced on the new album. “Nondescript” is actually the best word to summarize it — on my first spin I kept thinking, “This is Mars Volta?” Even though I find the band painfully overrated, their early stuff still very much had a clearly defined style unique to them. Apparently their last 3 albums in general are sort of nondescript from what I’ve heard, but I haven’t heard the other two

YMMV quite obviously, I do find the absolutely batshit style of composition paired with Cedric's overly-complicated lyricism to be very entertaining and, in some instances, very gripping. I do think they gradually got lost in the sauce, which is where they more or less fell into the trap of going way overboard in some spots, then overcorrected, then when they came back just chose to straight up wipe the slate clean but didn't really bother to finish a lot of the songs they wrote that time around. That last bit is my main issue with the last two albums primarily.
