Actually yeah you're right. It does depend on the emotion conveyed because I thought Time I from Wintersun was pretty cheesy when I first heard it, and that's trying to be grand and epic. hmmm, let me think about it. How would you define it?

Talons mate, there is some (not a lot) great symphonic metal out there that isn't cheesy. Nightwish's Dark Passion Play is a beautiful symphonic metal album full of poetry and hurt and songs like The Poet and The Pendulum aren't cheesy at all

Yeah I'm sure there's some great symphonic metal I was just joking, though all the stuff I've heard just makes me lol

Come on, Symphonic music isn't cheese! When other legendary bands played with orchestras, was it cheesy? When Scorpions, Deep Purple or Metallica did it, it was excellent, not mellow.

The only cheesy with Symphonic Metal is the lyrics. It's going to be either dragons, fairies, stories, or self respect and reaching our boarders. Everything else, I believe, is just a great mix of two awesome genres.

Yeah, there's a fair amount of that out there. Trying to be too 'epic' all the time if you ask me

With song titles like "turn loose the mermaids" and "dark chest of wonders" how could anyone not take the lyrics seriously?

''Nightwish's Dark Passion Play is a beautiful symphonic metal album''

I think the music is descent (can't remember well, I haven't jammed it more than once or twice) but the vocals are bad, or at least not what I was expecting. Imaginarium is far better, as the music is written on her voice and it's too theatrical, so I like it.

Yeah, some are laughably bad, but so are the themes of MANY death metal bands. Check out the Nightwish song if you don't know it by the way

I hated Imaginarium. Too cheesy and it was just kinda average

Looking forward to the new album with Floor Jansen on vocals. She's really great at live performances, best Nightwish singer so far imo.

@ChoccyPhilly Nah, Imaginareum brought them back to life and the movie was Bergman-ly interesting.

The only cheesy moment was during Song of Myself, when a woman says ''Dear child, stop working, go

play /Forget every rule/ There's no fear in a dream!'' I mean, you stupid piece of brick, if the child

stops working it's going to die! Of course children are not supposed to work, but saying things like

that doesn't help at all! And you also sound like an idiotic granny that worships Regan and has

childhood traumas and tries to sound good and friendly!

The movie was a nice idea and the album just didn't do anything for me, but hey opinions I guess. Do you think their next album is gonna be any good? I reckon it could easily go either way

Look, Floor kicks ass and is able of composing music, not like that mindless Anette. I also think that Tuomas's latest work, Music Inspired By The Life And Times of Scrooge was more than excellent. It seems like the band - and especially Tuomas - are back in the game and are ready to write new material that's gonna be ''epic''. We shall see.

Mmm yeah, I definitely agree that Floor brings more to the band than Anette. Also, now that Troy is a full time member, we'll get more folk influences, which will be great as always. Pretty stoked now

Nightwish never made a great album in the first place. If there's anytime that they're going to finally make a great album, it's with Floor.

They're definitely one of the better symphonic metal bands and do a decent job of minimalising the cheese

''one of the better''

I've seen it quite some times in here... Is it grammatically correct? I thought one could only say ''it's one of the best''

Not sure Mythodea. Makes sense to me, but I often get corrected anyway.

Any of you guys know when Nightwish is gonna release their next album?
