I find this album very cheesy at times, and I can't stand the flute/saw combo towards the end of Endlessly, but Holes and The Funny Bird are pretty amazing.

Chamber pop era Mercury Rev is inarguably cheesy, but still pretty savoury

I think the band were fully committed to this album being cheesy, you have to embrace it, it transcends cheese

This is a better 'album experience' than Yerself is Steam, I mean it even has little segues that make sense to the overall grand vision and shit - but the highlights on Yerself are absolute top tier

There's an argument the best song on Yerself is Carwash Hair and that songs not even on the album....if you know what I mean. It's a confusing ol' beast is Yerself, that only seems slightly less confusing because Boces is ten times more strange as an album.

Any other albums where the best song (or one of the best songs) isn't even on the album but it's 'on the album' as later editions have made it seem associated to that release?

The The's 'Soul Mining' is another for me, 'Perfect' is one of my favourites from that album and it isn't even on the album.

'The Laziest River' on 'Kaputt' is sort of another.

If 'Car Wash Hair' was officially on 'Yerself' I'd probably 5 it....so I only engage with that album with Car Wash Hair and so in my mind the album is a 5 but technically it can't be a 5....

DoofDoof, cherry-picking anything I 5'd on sputnik and you don't like (or is controversial) is not an argument for/against my impressions of Deserter's Songs, is it? I also 5'd Embyonic, what does this tell you? Not much, really.

Anyways, this album is a good one, but Yerself is Steam is more exciting and has less pathos. "Holes" on Jools Holland doesn't sound half as good as the studio version, and the bubbles floating around don't help the experience either.

The Baker albums are inherently 'messy' albums is my point but so bee it

'Deserter's Songs' imo is just as unique and creative, maybe more so tbh, but taste is taste is taste, and both styles are acquired tastes and liking one might not necessarily result in someone liking the other.

I'd hazard a guess I'm the biggest fan of the Rev here on Sput so really arguing about the relative qualities of their discog is very much in the 'nit picking' bracket for me. Top 30 all time band for the doofster.

gabba - having a laugh at other people's 5s is always fun and no one is changing my mind on that, life blood of the site

I watched the band live around the time of 'All is Dream' playing mostly material from 'Deserter's' and 'All is Dream' and they were one of the best bands I've seen live.

Also I've now listened to about seven or so of their live albums and they're great - definitely one of the only bands worth listening to that much live material from.

I’ve listened to it more now than I ever have done. It’s bloody impressive.

Goddess on a Highway was always absolutely monumental and Holes always seemed ‘classic’ but the actual record as a whole is outstanding
