While I always found this band kind of pretentious in thier ye-olde english librarian get-up and snooty accents, I really enjoyed The Cranes Wife and the story behind it. The songs were well written and musically engaging, giving the impression of an indie-rock musical. I could imagine this record being reimagined in its entirely with a full stage play. I havent heard any subsequent decemberists recordings, but I found this to be a great and defining work of thiers. The only flaw i could piont out is that some of the songs are dragged on too long and there are a couple tracks that could be considered filler.

Best not mess with the Shankill Butchers. Glad they added tracks 11-12 to later releases cause they're not bad.

wow, the island is incredible. going through this band's discography today (i'd only heard a few songs from each album + hazards of love and the king is dead all the way through) and loving it so far. i also seem to be doing it out of order but w.e

I love 'Perfect Crime #2'. It's guitar riffs and lyrics remind me of 'Life During Wartime' by Talking Heads. Has anyone else noticed?

So why did they not release culling of the fold on the regular album, its better than most any song on this album

Iirc, Jenny Conlee thought it was too harsh to put on the regular version, but I can't find anything to prove that, so take it with a grain of salt. But yeah it rules.

This is such a wonderful album. It has provided me immense comfort these last few days. I have the terrible tendency of wanting to check out an artist, checking out their first album, loving it so much I listen to that non stop for awhile and then forgetting to check out the rest of their catalog. Which definitely happened with this band, but I'm glad I'm checking the rest out now, so very glad. The Crane Wife 3 and Yankee Bayonet are exquisite.

I'd agree. As much as I adore some of the songs off their debut album, this is their most consistently excellent work.
