Such a good record, The Mariner is definitely one of their best songs ever. I think I'd 5 it if it wasn't for Grandfather's Axe which I kind of hate lol. Every other full-length song here is top-tier.
To me it's so clear that this and Palimpsest are their best albums, Kezia holds up pretty well in its ambition but the rest of their albums all feel like an awkward middle ground to get to this era, where the technicality actually feels purposeful and aligned with the songwriting.

It is definitely a grower, that's for sure. On first listen I thought it was weak but after a few times it grew on me immensely.

I have such nostalgia for Arif's poignant, poetic lyrics in earlier albums that it has been a struggle for me to get on board with Rody's more tongue-in-cheek, brash lyricism in the newer stuff. But I think his writing style really shines here and is very meaningful; there's a sense of maturity that I have missed that is coming through.

Agreed Rody has gotten a lot better. Volition and Palimpsest still my favs, coming from someone who got into band when Turn Soonest to the Sea was the new hot metal track. I hate people refuse to move past kezia and fortress if only because every other discussion on the internet essentially is 40-50% people bringing up the never returning to those "heights"
