Not really getting the 40WS debate, this is so close to WFaD it could have been made 1 year later, not 20 years later. Like there is basically no massive distinction in the sound or approach between the 2 (at least that I'm picking up). Obviously that's a good thing if you like WFaD (which I do).
I find Patrick's approach interesting and unique, it's almost painfully bare bones in that there is basically zero flair (no solos, no mid song switches, there are moelodies but no hooks etc) and the focus is on going as slow and dragged out as possible. It def allows his incredible vocals to shine. It gets a bit one note for me personally but I am digging the bookends and Stations a lot on first couple of listens.

whatever patrick's songs lack in variety they make up for in sincerity. i think some people lack the understanding that musicians aren't striving to make a product, they're just as likely to be creating music for their own reasons so even if musicians don't step outside their comfort zone what matters is that it's fulfilling for them to make. ultimately the dude's just a songwriter who likes to sing.
cannot stop spinning 'teacher' - it might be my favourite song he's ever done. time will tell of course, but that song is as least as good as anything on WFaD
i will say tracks 3 and 4 are an unfortunate lull - they're good songs, but not to the quality of the other three and it's unfortunate they're back to back right in the middle of the album. that said, the other three songs are all-time-best quality for patrick.

Yeah, Night Comes Down was only spun once as a single compared to the ??+ times I listened to Stations. It fits better in the album context, but these vocal melodies with the lyrics only make sense to Pat lol. Excited to get to Teacher here soon.

Really feels like the album covers for Watching From a Distance and this should be swapped. At least that dude is walking with that weight uphill, because this very much feels like reflecting on the lost love and learning from it, even though waves of grief still wash over you from time to time. Nowhere near as depressing as Watching From a Distance (unless I've just lived in this brain swamp for so long this album feels slightly uplifting lmao). Like the art of this album fits the title of it, sure, but being suffocated and smothered with your love is WFaD to a T.

never heard anything by this band, first song has me hooked, the vocals are incredible. gotta say, the way the instrumentalisation went in the intro i kinda expected growls, but i'm much happier with this instead. dude sounds like a less flamboyant chris cornell

@pyro on first couple listens this is way less depressing than The last one. This is more longing than outright depressed to my ears and the cliff notes on Bandcamp vibe with that
