Listened to two Adebisi Skank albums and they were pretty fun. Actually had been meaning to check them for ages, so that was nice. A really tenuous link to these guys, though; they really don't sound anything alike whatsoever. They both sit somewhere under the broad umbrella of experimental guitar music, otherwise they're doing very different things.

Like with literally every band that’s played there: the KEXP performance seems like a nice place to start

I hadn't heard of KEXP before this so I've been checking out a bunch of awesome artists and bands they've put on and yeah, they just always have great quality recordings.

This was always going to be overhyped but it doesn't mean it isn't a lot of fun.
Fabienk is an absolute banger, as is Yor Zarad.

"Anyone want to take it a step further into (less conventional, more experimental) microtonal math rock The Mercury Tree would be best starting point I can think of."
I listened to a couple of tracks, really enjoyed the music, but couldn't get into the clean vocals.

"eh i don't think so. youtube algorithm initially picked them up pretty hard iirc and then kinda spread like wildfire to all the reaction channels and content creators. certainly some shock value with the costumes but i also think this is a lot of people's first time hearing microtonal music and it being played with such groove and proficiency esp in an era of AI music def helps"
This, exactly

"tell me you don't think this is an accident? there are numerous ways to massage and influence the grand algorithm. I still don't really find this remotely unique, like I said before there are a dozen bands from france right now that sound just like this, so other than the funny get ups I honestly don't get the blow up. definitely feel like this would translate best in a live setting and in like 15-20 minute doses."
Any French math rock bands you'd recommend? I think the algo picked up on the costumes, the double-neck bass-guitar, the whimsical humor, and the very polarising effect of both their look and their music (math rock, microtones). Both the negative and positive comments must've contributed to the virality. The quality of both the music (it's ok to not like them, but many people really really do, including long time avid math/prog rock fans) and the musicianship also played a big role imo. While extra tempering with the algo is not impossible, there's also no evidence for it.

Poil, Ni, Piniol, Shelter, DRH to name a few that I have seen live and which blew me away.

Yeah, their music is good, but way less special than what the hype makes it out to be.

You're one of many who feels this way, but for many of us, AdP is really living up to the hype. I haven't heard anything this good, in any genre, since Slift's UMMON and SWANS' To Be Kind. As much as they didn't invent anything per se (King Gizzard, Shellac, Gong, Primus, Zappa, Crimson, etc.) their special blend of groovy microtonal math rock feels quite unique, plus they compose really good songs, with tension building, great riffs, and strong crescendos.
