"Haven't listened to AFI since Decemberunderground...so when did Davey Havoc start sounding like Robert Smith and David Bowie?"
Kinda started on the last album but he really committed on this one.

"so when did Davey Havoc start sounding like Robert Smith and David Bowie?"
Probably around the times they covered The Hanging Garden and Ziggy Stardust.

So while AFI is hot and has people attentions, here is a recommendation for anyone missing the black sails / art of drowning sound: Holy Blade. They just have a debut self titled ep and it is stellar

The Hanging Garden cover is really good! AFI covering the Cure.

GONNA BE BROWSING THE REDDIT FOR HOURS NOW LMAO
came by to say i think Spear of Truth and Ash Speck are my confident favorite 2 under Nooneunderground. really haven't seen much discussion on Spear of Truth either, chorus is heavenly

B-side was awesome but you can tell why it was kept off the record. Didn't match the vibe 100% though you could probably slot it in somewhere. Spear of Truth was an instant favorite for me. Still really digging the 1, 2, knockout combo that is Ash Speck -> VOIDWARD -> Marguerite though.

Marguerite is my only auto-skip on this because of the chorus. Sorry Grey.

Yeah, Maguerite is probably my least favourite at the moment because of the chorus. I really like the verses though. Also less keen on Ash Speck.
I ADORE Spear of Truth. The whole cowboy/western vibe on that song is immaculate. The run of Behind the Clock into Spear is probably my favourite stretch of the record. Absolute 10/10 run.
I like Nooneunderground but probably not as much as most. I feel like the production on that song is quite messy.

Overall, I really like the record but also have a lot I'm processing with it.
This is the biggest shakeup in their sound for a while, I feel like Burials through Bodies are relatively similar, even though they obviously have their own identity. We were due a big shake up and this is it. I'm all for that but I'm still processing it.
Wrapped up in that is feeling like this is probably their most 'hero-worshipping' album. They are really good at this sound but it also feels like a borrowed sound, which brings a sense of loss for me. Like it feels weird to have AFI be a band that is currently so dedicated to a retro pastiche. As touched on earlier in this thread, it almost feels more like a side project.
I think this is also their most self-serious, intense album since, in my view, Sing the Sorrow. It's definitely a big artistic statement that responds to the madness of our times. And that's great but it's such a mood that the album is probably not as splashable as some of their more recent stuff, which can be a bit more easy listening.
Really good to see this artistic development, it's giving me a lot to think about!
