across the dark is one of their best, especially weighed down with sorrow, i could listen to nothing but clones of that song and honestly be happy

Across the Dark is my second fav Insomnium yeah.

Insomnium and Dark Tranquillity have the best melo death discogs IMO. Insomnium is probably more consistent though. Two of my very favorite bands. I really wish the newest DT didn’t suck.

Insomnium are awesome I just had to give venin what he asked for on the last page
Winter's Gate is by far the best record of the genre for me
giving this another spin so I can feel good about slapping a big fat 2 on this thing
maybe 2.5

but deep down y'allz know that be'lakor's outro songs can't be beat
also thanks for reccing iotunn, RYM says they're prog/melodeath so I'm sure I'll like it

You'll like it but you won't love it.

Xfing no arguments there
And I second the Ega comment as well

If there's one metal-related genre I dislike it's definitely prog. Maybe explains why I didn't like Iotunn haha
Another thought I had is that releasing an album in early January is pretty smart as there's barely anything else being released and everyone has loads of time on their hands as the weather is crap, so it gives you pretty good exposure. Why don't more bands release albums this time of year? I guess the only downside is it gets forgotten by the time magazines/people do their end of year lists?

Case in point...every year, whatever album I listened to most in January ends up top in my Spotify Wrapped.

How is this so accurate? LOL

To be fair, that's the case for a lot of 4.0 tier music. you still give it a 4.0 but it just doesn't resonate with you personally
Conversely, think the outro lines to "much more was lost" are some of the most beautiful English language poetry ever written, but I still have that album at just 4.0 for now
so yeah, trying to be objective when music is subjective requires a bit of soullessness

you're sleeping on it then mate, record's a textbook 4.5

Man speaks the truth, across the dark is massively underrated imo, weighed down with sorrow is a 10/10 track
This album is great, really easy to listen to and has some awesome hooks... not a classic or anything exceptional by any means but I could listen to this kind of stuff all day

It has some amazing cleans that are super heartfelt (The Harrowing Years), Mikael could learn a thing or two on how to incorporate cleans in a melodeath song. And the riffing is probably one of the best Insomnium has ever made (Down With The Sun's verse when the second guitar joins and then the chorus riff is pure groove)
The main drawback for me is that the mix is so shitty. FLAC, my CD, 320 mp3, nothing, I've tried it all.

Above the Weeping World was so so good, and so I remember being disappointed when Across the Dark came out. Listening back to it now it's definitely better than I gave it credit for when it was first released, but I still wouldn't put it in my Insomnium top 3

I remember it disappointed me when it came out, I was expecting another Since The Day It All Came Down... I've revisited it recently and it still feels kinda flat for me.

Heart Like a Grave and Shadows of the Dying Sun are my favorites. Pale Morning Star has such an emotional impact on me every time I hear it that it brings tears to my eyes. I can't explain it.

I think so much has to do with which album you listened to first. For example, Come Clarity was my first In Flames album (I was too young when their "classics" came out!) and to this day Take this Life, Leeches, Crawling through Knives are some of my favourite tracks by them
