dunno, but conversely I would be inclined to assume a lil meth as lubrication may yield better results here
unfortunately I'm not a dedicated enough Opeth fan actually, to conduct this research myself
Beautiful page break

That delicious final groove of §7 is tooooooo shoooooort!!! Fadeout could have been delayed, Deliverance-style. Then the final track would maybe even have gained more weight as a surprise.

Not getting some of the hate here. As a whole, it’s the best record they put out since Watershed in my opinion, maybe even since GR. The record is very identifiable as well as it doesn’t really sound like any of their others. Those subtle spoken words from Anderson and Tempest are fantastic as is the GR overtones sprinkled throughout. I do wish we had song titles instead of paragraphs. I also think a proper Opeth record should stretch further than 50 minutes. Im one to always suggest cutting down run times that overstay their welcome, but never with these guys.

And agreed Trif. The end of 7 kind of is the end of the ‘story’ and a good way to end the record, until that twist that comes years later in a subtle manner being The Story Never Told….

Absolutely Titan! Agreed. It's a very lovely work. That extended ending would have made sense story-wise and would have been nice indeed.
After my first week of listening, I'd rank it on par with PC.
Heritage is still one of my fave Opeth records ever, and I prefer ICV to this one too. But it's very early for rankings of course, and this one feels like there is a lot to go through and explore and discover, very much looking forward to spend time with it. I'm happy with this album!

“Not getting some of the hate here.”
Not seeing any hate itt. For the most part i think people’s reactions have been lukewarm

Fine it’s in the other thread then. Not necessarily hate you know where I was going. Plus, a 2.5 on this site is like saying the album pretty much sucks.

I’ve been pretty balanced in saying the production is v solid and that isolated moments are cool, but after 5 full spins nothing is sticking
2.5 definitely seems fair (although “this website” is irrelevant because I don’t adjust my ratings according to everyone else). “This website” is also showing me a 3.8 average which seems healthy enough to me

Glad for those really enjoying it but don't understand thinking it's a return to form, the songwriting in their late '90s and 2000s releases were much more cohesive and compelling. This is more like heavier and more symphonic Sorceress a lot of the time to me. The songs that work the best imo are easily 4 and A Story Never Told.

Saying it's a return to form is silly anyway, since that implies they sucked between Watershed and now.
They never sucked.

Pff tell me about it. Think I'll put this on hold for now and try again in a couple of weeks or something.

Album Rating: 4.0
Bumped from a 3.5 to a 4.0 since I feel it to be more like a 3.8 (we need decimal rating FFS sputnik Lord)
This is not bad by any means.
Had this been released last year it would've performed better.

This is a very 3.9 album for me. A solid release from a legendary band past their prime but with some gas left in the tank. Maybe I'm being generous, but I have soured on prog metal in recent years and found this to be a pleasant surprise.
