Not sure how I feel about this yet. The death growls are back but very subdued, and the proggy stuff still runs rampant just as it has for over a decade now.
Still, this might be their best blend of death and prog since Watershed. I'm enjoying it, just wishing it felt a little more focused and aggressive.

Great review, jamming this at the moment and really enjoying it, hopefully it holds up over the full run and repeated listens. I felt like the singles really took time to grow on me, didn’t do too much initially but now I like them a lot.

Drums here are p snazzy and there's a lot of suddenly interjected mega cool bits but ironically that is definitely the problem with this record, things kinda seem strung together without too much rhyme or reason. I.e-it's a prog record. I'm definitely happy that the death growls weren't just reintegrated for fucks sake and actually serve to enhance the more pummeling bits here.

my litmus test for progpeth was always damnation so it always bugged me that they didn't try to channel that again but this is as good as i'd expect a modern opeth record to be

Finally jamming the whole album now, and it pretty much confirms my thoughts from the first single: this is like if you took In Cauda Venenum, made it heavier, added some avant garde elements, and added growls. And considering how much I love ICV, that's not a bad thing by any means 🤘🤘🤘

I've listened through maybe 4 times and I have to say, this is pretty solid. Great album.

Damnation is amazing, one of my favourites, but Opeth don’t make music for depressed teenagers anymore, and that’s ok lol

I've never considered any of their stuff to be written for depressed teenagers.

It might just be me but have these guys ran out of ideas? This whole album does not jive with me at all. There's decent ideas scattered throughout but as a whole... yikes.

It's a grower. I was a little bit like that with it for the first couple of listens - it seemed a bit incohesive but I like it a lot.

I personally related most to Damnation when I was a sad 12 year old idk

Sorry, I’m being flippant, but my point is that if the last 15 years of Opeth had just been rehashes of Damnation I think people would have been pretty sick of it by now. That album is probably best as a singular work
