I've gotta tell ya', I was really worried when I bought this album, with everyone saying how they had gone all progressive. After the first listen, I couldn't understand how people could compare this to classic maiden. But, it has grown on me to the point that the only two Maiden albums I like better are Number Of The Beast and Somewhere In Time. Up the irons!

The Pilgrim is the best I've heard off it so far.

Great review.

This is the first Iron Maiden album I have picked up, and I am loving it.

I am going to give other albums a try too.

I'm loving Brighter Than a Thousand Suns. The Longest Day's pretty nifty too. Dicko shines in that one.

On reflection, the only thing that really holds this album back is I believe Iron Maiden went a tad bit overboard with how epic they made this. They needed one or two more songs like "Different World" and less 8 minute epics. this is a cd that it might be hard to listen to it all the way through, unlike maybe powerslave or number of the beast. Still phenominal though!

Only 3/10 songs exceeded eight minutes, but I see what you mean. :p

Personally, as long as they don't go overboard like they did with Angel and the Gambler (wtf were they thinking with that one?), I like the longer tracks. Each moment is essential to the song and they aren't mindlessly wanking just for the sake of it. Maybe DragonForce could learn from them. :oThis Message Edited On 10.01.06

I can't see how this album ranks with NotB, PoM and Powerslave. It's a good album, a very good album for any metal band, and decent by Maiden standards: but seriously, if any album is bland, it's this one. I can't tell one track from the other, it's the same all the time. Out of the Shadows is just completely dumb. I find The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg to be extremely boring.

On the other hand, the heavy songs on this album "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, For the Greater Good of God, These Colours Don't Run" are awesome, and The Legacy is a sickeningly good epic.

Also all their choruses sound the same. I don't think this album is quite up to par with their old standards.

I'm seeing Maiden tonight, and after listening to this beast of an album for a few weeks, i disagree with the general opinion on it. Now, now, I don't mean I don't like it, but while the theme has a lot to do with war, I think there are for more religious overtones here.

For example, 'The Pilgrim' and 'Lord Of Light' use religion as their base with no war lyrics to be found. However, even the epic war songs, such as 'The Longest Day,' mention God and religion quite a bit. What I really like is how Maiden is almost completely objective to everything, rarely picking a song. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go hear this live!!!

I agree, DragonForce is great, but the vocals are skull rape and the guitarists could tone down the senseless wanking a little bit

After the concert, I can only say that I'm fucking amazed. The new album was about twice as good live! This is coming from someone who initially groaned at the fact that they were playing it in full. Bruce was in a unusually good mood, despite the boos he got when he announced they were playing AMOLAD. And when they got to Fear Of The Dark, and Iron Maiden, the place exploded in a way I've never really seen at Continental before.

The only downside is that people actually booed Iron Maiden. No wonder their only playing like ten dates here...

Yo carney3110, i was at Continental last night too. I'll be the first to admit I was displeased that I wouldnt hear anything from DOD and that they would play AMOLAD in full... but wow I feel like I couldnt have asked for a better show. The songs felt so much better live than they do on the CD
