Idk why the discussion about Slowdive / MBV / Beach House happened but I joined in anyway
I also haven’t seen ANY outside context / reaction to this band generally, so RYM etc. is gonna be lost on me
(guessing some will be more tuned into the general consensus but I remain unaffected by this - I was genuinely surprised these guys are apparently quite big tbh)

Yeah CAS have a completely different vibe to those bands, even if they all creep into the same genre tags at times. CAS almost have their own genre - "bedroom gaze".
I did not expect to like this anywhere near as much as I do - sort of got influenced by the negativity surrounding them - but it's just beautiful. May end up being my album of the month, but there's a couple I'm really looking forward to on the 26th, so we'll see.
I definitely can see how people HATE it though...

enjoy that this band held the throne of bloodless indie washup for exactly one week before Glass Animals stepped in. can't even stand out within mediocrity

Jon - I’m just surprised you’re still talking about this a week later, be surprised you have given this one full listen, let alone returned. Just seems you’ve established your opinion and now are keeping on talking - without listening more. I try and avoid doing that these days.

I'll never understand why some keep returning over and over again to comment about albums they strongly dislike.
Not a criticism, not gaslighting, just a genuine curiosity.

yeah johnny dont you have any positive to say jeez man

All about balance Mark.
You have to stomp some authority, address the risk ridiculous adulation some shite gets with a sense of conviction.
Fully justifiable.

zak - I used to do it all the time here for new albums I gave one listen to and disliked.
Now I never do it. I enjoy my time here tenfold. Up to the man himself.
I just feel it is justified at the time of release for the first week but if your criticism just stays the same then you're just being the taste police for reasons of feeling superior most likely. I doubt you're listening to the album every day at that stage so it has become a purely intellectual pursuit lol

It's not up to me to squash appreciation of what I consider crap music - I mean what do I know? The amount of times I've thought something's really great and then completely changed my mind... (and the other way around).
And YES - I absolutely will share my initial judgement of something I dislike (such as the Still House Plants album this year) but tend to have no desire to return to the discussion unless I change my mind.
But I can definitely see the activist point-of-view too, so thank you Zak...

You can't build an idea of someone's taste without seeing what they don't like, I'm not a massive fan of 'purely positive' ratings or accounts...so I respect someone having the gumption to rate things low, review things low, give negative comments.
But if it just becomes this attritional grind of the same sh't on the daily that really is just a fu to people who like something trying to chat about it once the 'hype of the new release' period has passed. Like I said, used to do this sort of thing all the time so I do get the appeal to doing that somewhat but very close to trolling eventually.

well yeah, discourse is built on contrasting perspectives and strong opinions, which are ultimately why i use the site - absolutely no use limiting that to positive feedback only. does having a strong negative opinion mean that I'm more invested in the discourse than the music? you bet, but the reason it's a strong opinion to begin with is that this band exemplifies a lot of tendencies i hate in a sound i used to adore (and am still p sympathetic to) - so there's my stake in the argument
and also this thread + site reaction has been, at absolute best mixed towards the record. would argue that more of the supportive posts than negative have been aimed at a vacuum, and am more than happy to be going with the flow on this one. doof can feel as fu'd as he likes, but he's still a minority within the readership i imagine for this thread
and also the reason I bumped this thread - that it's funny this has been replaced as the indie whipping boy of the moment so quickly - is topical content no matter how much you like the record
