i always wonder to myself how people don't get sick of this sparse and vaguely sad brand of whimpering music but then i remember that way more people think that about the music that i listen to and understanding dawns on me. but i still think it every time one of these pops up on the "best" section and i'm left scratching my head because i've heard this album 400x in slight variation

Why? Anth's point is that there are a lot of albums vaguely similar to this that he feels like he has heard 400x times, I can't feel the same about the inevitable black metal album that is in the top 10 of Sput charts every year?

I suppose genres of music with similar DNA will sound the same if you're not invested in the genre.

Lots of people say all jazz music is the same when they don't actively follow and listen to jazz music.
