what does escape the fate have to do with anything
also what do the lyrical content and themes of the song have to do with the contents of the melodic writing?
what?

It's just this thread is reeking of "how dare he listen to music I dislike and not copy his melodies from the previous album"

why did you over internalize it and make it about your own writing though?
i dont want him to copy melodies from his old work. ive never felt like hes done that. his whole discog up until now was a display of him constantly pushing himself in new creative and exciting directions as a vocal writer, and i think he did that without repeating himself all that often. this is just the most lowest common denominator stuff hes ever done it has no flavor

I take influence from places people aren't always all over melodically and sound wise. And seeing people rip into another musician that's better than me for his influences makes me wonder how bad I'd be flamed in his position.

why not try and look to new patterns and scales to expand your template? you dont even have to abandon the stuff you like, but just opening yourself to more ideas shows the vast well thats out there and you can figure out how to blend that in your own voice

Fair enough actually. I think it's just disheartening because even tho I do that a lot already, its usually these modes that carry the subject matter the best for me. I always prefer to do what suits the song. Maybe these aren't the most creative vocal melodies but they generally all fit just right.

ofc someone like me is gonna be harsher on nonstop stock pentatonicism. i went to school for this shit!
i dont think my standards are all that high at all really all i need are 4ths and 7ths and im vibing but when its only the stable notes of the chord and the most stable step up, it feels like *nothing* is happening
but i wouldnt be too fussed about what other people think in the creators shoes. its kinda up to you to make the music that fulfills you and if it does that, it doesnt matter if other people dont dig it. nothing has ever been universally loved by everybody, but being able to be proud of your own work is as fulfilling as it gets

I guess. My standard is more "whatever suits the subject matter" for the most part. Certain vibes just hit the right spot. I'm more about the emotion than the "logical" way of writing a creative vocal melody. And Jesse still gives it his all in his vocal performance so I can probably more easily forgive "basic" melodies. Him doing a World Around Me type of song would be heavenly to me idk

I appreciate the input. Sometimes its just disheartening bc as an artist sometimes you want an audience to hear you, to relate to the themes you're putting out, to feel like you're being heard and aren't alone. And while maybe its not gonna be universal, goddamn it stings not growing when I put so much in. Although at this point its probably my own fault because I'm abysmal at marketing anything.

yeah marketing is ass but you gotta do it lol. shits like half of the whole process but def easy to be discouraged by the slow burn process
might be helpful to consider that, even if one audience doesnt dig it, therell always be another one open to it. like as an example, by nooo means is sputnik representative of reality lol

True tbh. rym seemed to like my first two albums and then be mixed on my 3rd lol and thats off like 12 ratings for all three. I kinda agree with the rating trend. I'm doing everything in my power to make my 4th better.

i must admit the first album is better and if i do end up dropping my rating it'll probs just be to a 4 but there's a lot of stuff here that just works for me - the slowest stuff especially.
