"This thing is seriously bereft of any memorable hooks, esp on tracks as garbage as Ceremony. And where is the intensity? The same people who loved Diamond eyes for its insanely catchy choruses and career-high screams thinks this is on the same level? How? Why? The only thing this album rly has is their brand of atmosphere and moodiness, otherwise it’s like listening to all the weakest moments from KNY"
Even though I like the album overall, I do agree with a lot of this. Also, The Spell of Mathematics is the song that immediately comes to mind when I think of all the worst traits of modern Deftones. One of the most unimaginative and lazy songs in their entire discog

other than the singles, Math is like the album highlight. Bad take

It's easily my least favorite here, and instantly kills the pace of the album for me

That's Pompeij for me. The only bad thing about Math is how often it gets stuck in my noggin'

When it comes to the deep(ish) cuts, Radiant City is where it's at for me. Love how catchy and aggressive the bassline is, and it really makes me wish Sergio was still in the band

speaking of Sergio, I think he really carries the softer portions of Math. Radiant is ok, kind of a filler track

how can anyone say Ceremony doesn’t have a hook, that gets stuck in my head all the time

I was honestly just thinking that, that's like of their catchiest songs in years

The only thing about it I remotely like is the “ooh” after the chorus. Kind of. Also both Mathematics and Pompeji are underwhelming. Mathematics is prob worse tho because the finger snap outro is awful.
This album has a few key moments that I enjoy, but I don’t think listening to the entire track for like 20 seconds of gratification is worth it. Headless is a good example of this when they sing “ooh your attempt is useless” (also wtf is up with their usage of “ooh” I’m actually noticing it all over this album rn as I’m relistening). That part of the track is a cool transition but the rest of it is pretty underwhelming. Ceremony same thing, that few seconds I like just isn’t worth the rest. And a lot of their choruses and prechoruses are so uninspired. “It’s an illllllusion” yawn

why Deftones so divisive

idk but definitely one of the most divisive bands on the site. At least we're all (mostly) fans at the end of the day

Pompeji might be the biggest pile of garbage they've ever come up with for sure. Chino just sucks so hard on it as well.
People were praising the production on this from day one, but to me it always sounded muddled, murky and kind of lifeless. I don't know if it's because it's got the Terry Date stamp attached to it, that everyone likes to jump on its nutsack, but this ain't it. KNY has their best production since WP or the s/t basically and in my mind it's how modern day Deftones should sound.
Songwriting is middling, Chino's vocals are just not good on a lot of this, the drums are ignored and obscured by the production choices. Overall it's between this and Gore for their weakest effort, for sure.

I don't really agree with any of that but yes, Chino ruined Pompeji. That could have been an ok track without his hollering
