Blatantly reposting what I wrote in another thread about why the newer Sylosis material kinda sucks:

1) The riffs just kind of feel phoned in for some reason.

2) The guitars in general seem to have taken a back seat to the vocals, at least relative to their earlier albums

3) The songs feel slower and almost butt rock-ish at times. The drumming in particular just does very little for me

4) Those atmospheric leads that were sort of their signature sound in the earlier albums feel a lot less prevalent

5) I'm not 100% sure on this one but I think the new tuning they use doesn't help either. I think E standard actually did work better for them

Haven’t really followed this band at any point but I love the latest single. Will be Czechin the new album Feb 20th.

Did they really change their tuning for their recent work?

I recall Josh explicitly stating "you can do everything you need to do on a guitar in E standard" in his early YT videos.

@meborphus - they used D standard on Cycle of Suffering and C# standard on this album

No wonder these two sound closer to generic metalcore. The lower the tuning the more stale they get?

I think the tuning doesn't help but it's mainly just the riffs and leads are not there like they used to be

Cycle was great agreed, it's a shame this record seems to be fairly high in most listened, cause it's absolutely their worst. Hope they play some older stuff on the concert

Cycle is good, but I don't think it compares to anything that came before it (maybe on even footing with Dormant Heart).

Gave this a listen recently and really have no problem with the music, but every time Josh tries to inject any cleans I cringe inward. I miss Jamie Graham.

Hawksy dishing out the smoke today LMAO

Always thought these guys were just kinda okay. Not very memorable but not terrible either. This new stuff is straight Three Days Gojira buttcore lol

I'd rather let one of the thousand pound sisters gargle on my ballsack than ever listen to anything by this band ever again.
