‘this is 100% card carrying meme music. the only thing that could make this worse is if they got popular on tiktok or some other virus website‘
the most hilarious thing about this comment is that hype has never actually heard this band…
yet he’s right 😂

Calling this ‘meme music’ is daft. I’ve only dipped in out and of their discography, but you don’t make a track like Dragon unless 1) you have genuine chops and 2) you have a genuine appreciation for albums like Mental Vortex/Killing Technology. It also helps that it sounds like an actual band playing together, with chemistry, unlike the synthetic rhythmic exercises on the last Tool album. This won’t end up on my end of year list or anything (it’s too inconsistent), but I appreciate what they’re doing and it certainly doesn’t feel ‘fake’ to me in the slightest.

If they did, they likely would have applied that same level of songwriting Dragon has to the rest of the album.

Dragon is easily the best song here and does evince those arguments, but yeah the majority of songwriting here is v much the standard Gizzard gruel with style X pasted over it

I’m not saying the rest of the album is up to that quality, Casavir, (I said it was inconsistent), but that doesn’t mean the band aren’t genuine. You can’t just switch on the ability to write great tracks, or please everyone for that matter. My point was that it doesn’t feel contrived to me, it feels like they genuinely love that style of music and wanted to put their own spin on it. Unlike that Sleep Token album, it doesn’t feel like a cynical pick and mix of what’s popular currently or ‘modern’.

It's not a matter of switching on an ability to do so. There are a lot of albums out there where the entire album is kind of horseshit but then there'll be that one song that generally gets everything right. The Ultra-Violence by Death Angel is a good example of this with the song, Voracious Souls.

You said “If they did, they likely would have applied that same level of songwriting Dragon has to the rest of the album“, as if you can just recreate that level of creativity within a band at will. There are plenty of ‘genuine’ bands out there, who love the music they’re playing and would gladly play any toilet at the drop of a hat; that doesn’t mean their music isn’t rotten, however.

"damn casa hates death angel what a surprise"
The only reason they ever got the acclaim they did was due to how young their members were at the time (as it was something constantly mentioned about them in zines at the time since their drummer was like 15 when they recorded The Ultra-Violence). Other than that, there was nothing special about them.
Generally, I feel the same way about Infest as it was also an album in that genre which received tons of press for reasons completely outside of how the music sounded and would have fallen flat had it been some regular band's first album.
