“ post punk isn’t real. it’s a genre that was defined by following another genre chronologically rather than by any actual intrinsic quality and even by that metric it’s made up. Marquee Moon came out 2 years before London Calling”
They’re all made up. Post-punk is like grunge, an umbrella used to demarcate more than just stylistic similarities. It doesn’t matter much more than that, none of them do.

While we're on the topic, here's a new song collab with Lost Souls of Saturn

I understand post punk isn't necessarily "real" but i find it useful as a descriptor as stuff labelled post punk usually has a certain sound or quality that appeals to me more than punk in the traditional sense. I feel much the same about post hardcore

Agreed. Labels are essentially wrong, but some are useful nevertheless.

New track was sleepy as shit. Miss when it felt like they had a bit more energy/buildup.

| |
New track is really just Joe Casey wailing over some goth-ambient duo's stuff, so it ain't exactly anew song from Protomartyr

in the desert, I was humbled
seeing what a thousand years of ice did
but I'm not coldhearted
little dogs still lick my hand

Holy cock
They'll be touring with Idles in the US West Coast
That's one ticket I'd die to see

It did take a long time to really click with me too, but once it did, I was head over heels

Not that everyone has to share my opinion, just to be clear, everyone is entitled to their own opinion

ofc we are; I'm looking forward to be head over heels about this one, now it's on repeat

It is defo one of their more patient or acquired taste albums. I loved it from the get-go but that's cause I was already well acquainted with Protomartyr sound and approach before. I imagine a casual listener or a newcomer might have a harder time.

The songcraft here was a bit more subdued in my own opinion. I'd take most of the prior records over this because there were more highs and lows and climaxes.

Legit one of the best bands out there doing it

@MillionDead - that's not untrue - this album definitely has a consistent subdued approach that I could see getting lost in the shuffle. Great news is though, every song on an island is still this brilliant adventure of expert lyricism and musicianship that is really losing peers because they're just so damn good at it

Like IDLES are too angry and drunk. Parquet Courts too cutesy and coy. Iceage too scared to repeat themselves. The list of (amazing) bands goes on. Protomartyr continually perfect this sound that is so cold and devastating at a glance but is actually so warm and approachable and cathartic.
