--What songs would you all definetly cut? I might do a condensed tracklist as a second listen--
My abbreviated 72 Seasons (My remaining songs instead of what I would cut):
72 Seasons
Shadows Follow
Lux Aeturna
Crown of Barbed Wire
Chasing Light
Too Far Gone? (Metallica's Punk Song. If Sum 41 tried to make a Metallica song. Oh wait... so really, this would fit on Chuck).
Inamorata

I agree with everything in your your abbreviated tracklist although I think I would add Room of Mirrors to it as well purely because I think it has a really good solo.

"Also, 72 Seasons must be one bitchin hotel"

the first main riff of chasing light is solid

Funny. The solo for Room of Mirrors just came on, and it is good. Room of Mirrors isn't bad, and could work as the eighth track.

Great review as always Willie. Totally agree on just about everything, I'm up to Crown and that's easily the best track so far. Songs go on for too long and Kirk and Lars are probably bringing their laziest performances yet, but nobody's surprised by that. James owns this record, riffs & vocals both.

listening now
72 seasons is pretty good but prob their worst opener besides like frantic. main riff sounds super similar to that riff in the middle of moth into flame
reaallllyyy liking shadows follow so far this shoulda been the lead single

Agreed add in room of mirrors and you must burn. There's something about this album that makes it stand out from like every metallica album since like black-load. I think it's they actually wanted to play and they didn't overthink it. After st anger they tried to hard on magnetic and they were just warming up on hardwired. They feel really focused and comfortable here there's no baggage the boys are just having fun jamming and writing. Is my main takeaway

I feel this is significantly less inspired than Hardwired was. Just endless amounts of the worst modern day Metallica habits

sleepwalking has a lot of potential but they get a bit too caught up in the mid tempo chugs in the first half... second half has big sabbath vibes though that riff five minutes in shoulda been the basis of the entire song
you must burn is kind of a snoozer so far
will say these are prob the best james studio vocals since the the 90s for sure

lmao second song in a row that's kinda boring but then suddenly gets really interesting five minutes in why do they do this

No doubt a strong-willed producer that they actually respect could do them some good. They should bring back Flemming... if he's still alive?

crown of barbed wire is def one of the better tracks here
half way through chasing light... there's been little to no variety in these tracks so far in terms of tempo/dynamic/vibez. not one clean guitar or anything. makes hardwired seem like an album of oddballs by comparison

That's where the Jam Session feel comes in... well, one of the ways.
