--Why remove the orchestral bit on Melting Point of Wax madge--
They didn't remove it so much as they didn't pay someone to recreate it for the re-recording...

No strings on Melting Point of Wax is a huge bummer not gonna lie

Some songs suit the new gruff Dustin voice, others it just feels out of place. Solid effort all round though

On another listen this version of Stare at the Sun has grown on me.

Personally I like this version better than the original, but mainly cause I'm not into Dustin's whiny vocals back then. I didn't start to like this band until Beggars came about.

Always thought the original Melting Point strings were a bit incongruous - that track is one of the few I preferred here, really solid rendition all round

A buddy of mine at work mentioned something similar. Though he didn't get into the details. He said he never liked Artist that much, and didn't like Thrice until Beggars. I told him to check out this version and see if it changed his mind. He said he dug the sound. He said he never liked the production on the original album.

This is a fun listen, and seems to be executed in a really authentic and real way. Not just a cash grab.
That being said, I think (as of now) id still rather listen to the original recordings.
A few tracks are a marked improvement with the gruffer more mature vocals, but there are just as many that don't have the same spark.
All in all, great to have both versions to listen to, the more the merrier. But really just makes me want a better mix on the original LP (which does sound flat and thin by comparison)

The OG vocals are way better. He sounds like he’s struggling with a miserable cold on this remaster

i keep thinking he sounds like phoebe in the friends episode where she has a cold, he can't stop overplaying the voice crack

It's still The Artist in the Ambulance.
I don't even know if this release was necessary!

I have some mixed feelings about this one. It's pretty neat overall, but the T/T is disappointing - especially since it's my favorite on the original.
I do really like the deeper growls on this album. Paper Tigers sounds great too, as most everyone else said already.

"On the original, Dustin sounds hopeful and committed. On the new version he sounds like he's failed 100 times but he's not going to just quit."
This seems pretty accurate

i personally love all the guest vocals here, particularly andy hull. they are subtle but add something unique to each tune. the only dustin vocals i don't prefer to the original are the title track. not really sure what it is but it just doesn't work as well. but he sounds great everywhere else. he kills it on don't tell and we wont ask (my favorite track).

I love the original and this version. I can’t wait to see them live! The Identity Crisis anniversary tour was amazing.

"they did an identity crisis tour? i cannot imagine them playing those songs other than one or two."
I think he meant the Illusion anniversary tour, and they did sound phenomenal there too. Aside from a rare performance of Phoenix Ignition, they've pretty much disowned IC and audibly cringe when it's brought up.
But yeah, like others have said this is fucking great and arguably the best example of a re-recorded classic in some years. The mix and performances are much more accurate to what they actually sound like live and greatly improved on the original, although Dustin does seem a bit tired on one or two tracks.
