"Crazy how people are still surprised to get an album like this one in 2022 from slipknot, versus an Iowa repeat, and then bitch about it. Lol. Let the very early 2000’s die. These guys are in their 40’s and mostly sober… music listening is a lot more enjoyable if you don’t try to put a band in a box and compare them to what you think they should be or previously were. Just enjoy the ride of a new album"
The previous album didn't sound like Iowa and most people liked it. The heaviness is irrelevant.

Overall, this album has just been ok. Definitely a step down from We Are Not Your Kind. Medicine of the Dead though is incredible.

"the real garth would be listening to aerosmith and be pissed off his son is playing this album right now"
Garth respects all rock and metal music. Though I will probably jam Dude Looks Like a Lady later today now.

"right but when you tie yourself to such a visceral aesthetic like slipknot has, generally negative reaction to this (and really everything theyve done over the last dozen years or so) is quite understandable."
I get your point, but I don't think wearing masks on stage points to that. We have decades of slower tracks from Slipknot since Vol 3. What I do think needs to be asked by the members is if the angsty personas are viable anymore to themselves. Corey seems to be in his best mental and physical state ever. Clown, aside from some family tragedies, seems to be the most open to experimenting with the bands sound. Of course, they will stay remotely heavy on stage with performing old songs, but I think some of the ideas on this record beg the question as to why they even need these personas anymore.

i mean it’s not just the masks. as someone else mentioned, the band members themselves haven’t been shy about comparing whatever upcoming album they’re promoting to their early material. it’s like they’re desperately clinging to what they were 20 years ago while also trying to keep things fresh, and it just doesn’t work. whether that’s because of a lack of talent, an inability to decide what they want to be, or something else, I don’t know.

It’s them not willing to completely abandon the elements that got them famous/filthy rich to begin with. That’s what you call a gamble and most people aren’t willing to do it with their livelihood/reputation on the line.

I started seeing it more as if my favorite bands are still making music, that's all that matters.

Dominion, if you’re taking any promotional interviews for any source of media without a grand of salt, then you’re doing it wrong.
|
| |
not really. plenty of bands steer clear of comparing their current work to material they’d done years (or even decades) before. slipknot afiak doesn’t really do that, and for good reason. if they “let the early 2000s die”, they would be telling all the people who pay money for their shit the same thing. so yeah it’s not much of a shock that people compare their current material to their older work.

completely understandable but telling to people to move on and stop comparing their more current material to their early stuff when even the band isn’t doing that isn’t understandable.

You’re not picking up what I’m putting down.
Promo material is for hardcore fans to pump up week 1 numbers.
Slipknot is bigger than any other modern metal band. Iowa, though loved by hardcore metal fans, sold very little compared to Vol 3 that had much more commercial successful music.
Again, take promo material with a grain of salt. It means nothing.

Does it really set expectations though? All of us are “first week simping” here giving them better week one numbers with every listen (whether you enjoy the music or not). We also seemed to forgive every single thing the band said about WANYK was before they released it because the music spoke for itself instead. Almost everybody here probably doesn’t remember what Corey and co. said in those pre-release interviews which proves what I’m saying. By the time the music is ours, people have already forgotten by these personas you’re talking about which is what my review is stating. The music on this album itself begs the question if they should even keep pushing these personas.

The real personas are the more personal interviews we see with Corey when he isn’t simply just answering phoned in questions about the next album, but ones speaking about what they mean emotionally. I don’t need to hear one more question about how “heavy” the next Slipknot record is because it doesn’t fucking matter and it hasn’t mattered since Iowa. They can say how heavy it is, Loudwire can circle jerk it, and I’ll ignore every word and be my own critic when the music is out. It’s all a spin for clicks, but I’m not saying there is no substance to their personas. It’s just that aspect of their personas is all these sites seem to focus on.

These “click bait” sound bites get fans and haters to check out the record as soon as it drops. Their angsty personas sell that shit apparently because people always dream of the days of S/T and Iowa even though they aren’t those same people. I don’t think they need to hold onto those personas anymore. Those fans who see them live still listen to their new shit no matter if it sounds like Iowa or not therefore I take it with a grain of salt. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Ending your message with another sweep and “all I’m saying”. If you’re happy to have a mature conversation, then start having one.
And harping on for pages? It was literally less than a page (excluding a page break) with Dominion about this topic. But hey, I’ll sit in my corner ignoring what’s being laid out in front of me.

There is no “nah you are what am I” tact. I gave my opinion which you can disagree with and did. I can admit I’m not as great at articulating points like you and can see these opinions being construed in a different way than I meant them to, but the issue I have is you calling my comments “fucking ridiculous”, dropping “lol” like I’m a joke to you, and then having the audacity to tell me not to sweep at you. Stop with your holier than thou schtick.
