This is solid in a lot of ways. Love the production mostly. The lack of dynamics in a few songs or flare kinda holds this back. Hopefully they make another and it isn't pop focused.

Amazing how boring music this busy and layered can be

Maroon V (the V is for Volta not for 5)

Bedlam felt a bit forced IMO, still good. Octahedron is nice just kinda boring
My ranking is : Frances > De-loused > Amputech > Bedlam > Noqtourniquet > Octahedron > S/T

I'm enjoying this album quite a lot. I wasn't expecting them to make the kind of music they used to, a decade later. Bedlam and Amp will always be my favorite TMV, and I'm fine with them not making music like that again--they weren't even on the two following albums. The variety just makes those albums even more special to me.
Really enjoying how laid-back and reserved this album feels, which kind of surprises me, because I tend to prefer frenetic music. But something about the mood is just vibing right for me. It feels very refined and precise to me. The amount of Latin influence is also a big plus-- that's always been something I've liked about TMV's music.
I also have the perspective of getting into the band after they'd disbanded and listening to their first 6 albums pretty much all at once. So I don't have any nostalgia for their earlier stuff. I have the unpopular opinion that while a very good album, Deloused is overrated compared to how their sound progressed album to album. This album just feels like a continuation of that progression to me.

Vlexis - you've hit the nail on the head, it's not exactly a surprising album given how the band have become more accessible/toned down/electronic from Octahedron onwards, especially seeing Omar's solo works from 2012 onwards.
I wish there was even MORE Latin influence on this album - Que Dios... is so criminally fleeting, it's one of the best tracks alongside Blacklight Shine!

Also for the record - I was pretty unimpressed listening to Vigil when it was dropped as a single, but now it makes me tear up at how lovely it is

It's a very "pretty" album, but it's objectively more boring than all their others (yes even Octahedron, which is pretty buh)

why are these songs so SHORT AAAAA

Just keep in mind listening to this that it seems that the entire thing (and the videos they released for the songs, too) is some kind of tribute to Puerto Rico.
I like what I've heard so far, a lot of subtle stuff going on production wise, sounds, etc. It doesn't sound the same obviously, but this move towards this style of subtle sort of pop/rock etc. reminds me of when AFI put out the ''Crash Love'' album, an album with a lot of subtle stuff going on, and great sound and production.

They pulled a Daniel Johns
I see what you did there. Actually I was pretty disappointed when young modern was released. Then with the passing of the years my views about the album changed for better

I don’t agree about this album having good production. They’re adding bells and whistles to incredibly lightweight songs, in the same way you’d hear on a pop album. Extremely sterile.

i talked to someone at a bar recently about how tmv were back, and they were astonished. They said they kind of fell out of paying attention to music and hadn't heard the band since Bedlam. I caught up with them later and they were aghast. "Where are the 15 min prog bangers??" It's pretty funny to me, because this was a lot of difference to get used to even with Octa/Nocta normalizing some of the things they leaned hard into here. But imagining going from Bedlam to this is quite funny.

i listen to probably 5-10 new albums a week. this might be the worst thing i've heard this decade.
it's hard to put into words just how bad this is. this is both beyond boring and offensive to the ears at the same time. it's absolute and complete trash.

If you want some real stinkers of TMV-adjacent albums, go listen to Omar's "Some Need It Lonely" or "Azul, Mis Dientes"
