There is something so marvelous, nearly magical about the inclusion and placement of "Pop Song" here. Never mind the fact that I've been listening to it since 2019. But I hadn't read the track list for UGLY SEASON beforehand and had no idea it made its way onto the album.
Three tracks of macabre, chamber-driven, neo-classical ambi-pop, a few seconds of silence as "Teeth" finishes up, then BOOM - you're smacked with that almost antithetical vibrancy of the opening synths of "Pop Song". It's very clearly the outlier here, but yet it still feels... _just right_.
Great album. Instantly took a seat in my Top 5 of the year. We'll see if it can stay there. It's only June but 2022 has been a damn good year for music thus far, especially compared to where things were at this point back in both '21 and '20.

Agreed, especially in the general sense about how strong 2022 has been. I have something like...6 album of the year contenders already? This is possibly chief among them, I simply can't stop listening to this. It's very avant-garde but also incredibly lush and approachable, easily Hadreas' best work if you ask me.

Top 3 of the year so far for me and my favourite Perfume Genius ever.

A lot of artists have been holding off on releasing new material due to the pandemic, that's why we're having a renaissance of sorts this year. PG completed most of this by 2019 but delayed the release until now (so that it pairs with the dance piece and he can tour the material? I'm assuming).

This is an aoty contender for me, I've played it at least twice a day for the past week. Love the super chill vibe of most of it. That 3 track run from the t.t to photograph is god mode. I do wish this had a better closer tho. And I also wish it didn't have Scherzo

Pop Song, Photograph & Hellbent are the standouts for me after my first listen. I wasn't crazy about the two longer tracks, but I'm hesitant to form any specific critiques cause i have a strong feeling this is gonna grow on me pretty heavily

t/t is a great tune, my fave here. Has anyone pointed out the faint similarity with late Coil stuff yet? I totally see it in some tracks here

I like this quite a bit but I gotta admit it's not drawing me back like I was hoping it might.

I really can't get into his vocals. The musical ideas here are definitely interesting but I just can't listen to a guy whimper and moan on every song
|
| |
yea, that's been a major factor in my enjoyment of his material. That's the only downside here, imo.
