really thankful tracks 9-13 gave this something of a unexpected turn and eventual musical climax because wow was the first half of this dreary beyond its own benefit

and like, idk, not even in a compelling way for me. I get the subject matter is pretty brutal and some of the lyrics alone were solid but the songwriting accompanying it was totally in one ear, out the other, nothing much setting it apart from the schlock of the narrative. hard for any of the suspense or desperation to land when the dynamics stay near-level that whole time and there's so little variation song to drawn-out song

not that I pride myself on being a downer and I'm glad y'all are getting something greater out of it but this was mostly a swing and miss for me compared to the hype and avg

I thought the same thing too, at first. I still wish it wasn't as strong on the Lana Del Ray vibes, but the entire thing has really come together for me. Not AOTY for me, but possible top ten.

After two listens I'm inclined to agree that there is some rly bland, dreary stuff weighing this down. Songs like Western Nights and A House In Nebraska are pretty boring to listen to. Lovely vocal performance throughout this album, but songs like those way overstay their welcome and just aren't that engaging. But there's some really quality stuff here too like American Teenager, Family Tree, and Ptolemaea

For me, the album goes from "excellent" to "picking my jaw up off the floor" at Ptolemaea and never looks back. With that said, I definitely think the tracks are sort of co-dependent; that ending stretch only has the impact that it does because the first half of the album lays the groundwork so effectively. If I had to cut any songs they'd probably be Western Nights and Gibson Girl, but I'd rather not cut anything and just focus in closely on the lyrics during those moments to remind me why they're an important part of the story.

Yeah I'd def prefer to just keep everything intact. I feel like trying to dice this thing up ruins the whole experience. It really is like a movie. Some moments are low on action, but they inform the exciting peaks and give them meaning.

โ€œWestern Nightsโ€ seems to be a weirdly underrated cut so far, itโ€™s one of my faves for sure.

alamo reminding me I really need to get into Nicole Dollanganger.

If anyone wants to cry even harder check out the song โ€œBruisesโ€ which was one of the earlier songs she released officially for this project. It got taken off streaming a few months ago and I was hoping it was because a version of it would end up on this but alas, it didnโ€™t. Shame because itโ€™s one of her best.
