Good review, thanks for sharing!

They're really having none of it. I do agree though that the lyrics aren't good on this record.

In the vocal tone of a depressed Dracula, Maynard James Keenan croons about black holes, Jesus, and the sea swallowing California. The culmination is basically a Substack reference: “I unsubscribe / I unsubscribe.”

Honestly, watching some of their live performances for stuff from this record and it just boggles my mind how they can't translate that energy onto record. They clearly still have it from a performance perspective
The version of Rabbit Hole here is a lot of fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zf7Hv-AsDo&t=3547s

Thought the SNL performances were fun, too. I don't really like The Lightning that much, but that's about as much fun as I think I could have with those songs

"Although I've heard much more obnoxious albums this year (see gang of youths and everything everything, the worst two records of 2022)"
is everything everything rly on par with this and gang of youths, damn
i did kinda enjoy a lot of the most absurd parts of this (end of the empire i-iii fuck me up baby), and gang of youths had too much stale cornballing to be properly offensive

Great band & good album, a solid 3, probably a 3,5.

Yeah, this would've been more in-one-ear-out-the-other if it weren't propped up by news of Win's weird and gross behavior, and the band's pretty bad handling of them. Will Butler's exit makes a lot of sense in retrospect, and I think is far more damning than folks are giving weight to. At least his solo project has been pretty fun and interesting.
Will be interesting to see how this band moves eventually, if it all. They seem to have completely lost the juice

I dont know about the juice, I just enjoy all the songs on this album, a really well crafted one, very consistent.
It probably doesn't have any of their best tunes in career but it is all in all very solid and pleasant to hear, as a whole I think that it works well.

by the way much of my appreciation came from their live performance, Rabbit Hole for instance was a great moment.
The lightening I is one of the best choruses this year.
End of Empire made me put back Ziggy Stardust for a few spins,
