so after a couple of weeks of digesting this, Sleeping Giant is definitely my favorite......also like that middle ambient section of the title track as well

That's a really good one.
Funny enough, I prefer the Mastodon song with the same name though, haha.
And Transcending Time rules too

Good ranking, though I'd probably put Answering the Call a bit higher.
The more I listen to this, the more the title track kinda disappoints me. It's not a bad song, but it really doesn't feel like one of their epics; rather, it's like one of their regular songs that they just decided to extend to 20 minutes. Doesn't bear much resemblance to the suite-like format used for songs like A Change of Seasons or Octavarium

Agreed, not one of their better epics, but still enjoyable. And I had Answering The Call as #1 after a few spins, but it has sunk since then. Still a jam of course....

T/t is definitely underwhelming compared even to Illumination Theory, and I'm not a big fan of that one, but it still has more direction imo.

All things considered, this definitely falls short compared to Distance Over Time

Disagreed there, but they're definitely comparable. This one has a better flow in my opinion.

Idk, I definitely prefer this over DOT. Just sounds more inspired to me

Album is excellent, their best sounding album production-wise. Answering the Call, Sleeping Giant and Transcending Time are my favorites from this one. Title track is probably their weakest epic ever though, nothing really stands out, I appreciate how sprawling and intricate it is but it probably needs some time to sink in.

The great songs are great, but damn, t/t definitely is the kind of song that has so much going on that everything loses impact. The last 30 minutes of this record just don't do anything for me (even though the middle section of the t/t is nice, but that's one small moment that's drowned out by the rest).

The title track does take a few listens - it's a grower for sure. By now, I personally think it's brilliant - the quiet middle section may be one of the best things DT has ever done, lyrics are powerful and fit the theme well and I have grown to love how the ending subverts expectations and mixes things up.
I really think it's a true statement and captures all aspects of what is great about where DT are at *now* from riffs, soaring solos, instrumental crazyness, melodic emotional breaks, lyrics that take you on a journey etc.

"Transcending Time" reminds me of a Boston song with tasty synth elements.
