^To be fair, there are 12 songs on DU so that's nearly half of the album that you're saying bears resemblance to sts.
But anyway, yes, thinking about it a bit more, it's probably reductive of me to write off DU as a rehash of sts. I guess it's just because I didn't really care for any of the electronica-tinged songs - they simply don't work very well imo - that I tend to forget about them. That combined with the subtle darkening of his singing timbre and his switch to that awful new screaming style was when I kind of started falling off of the afi train. I get that he switched to that screaming style to save his voice, but still.
And speaking of more DU b sides, they really should've fought to include The View from Here on the album, if not as a single then at least as a hidden track or something.

Also Summer Shudder could easily be an sts song, as could The Killing Lights with a little tweak in production

Yeah this is pretty disappointing

It's pretty telling that, even as a big fan of AFI, that I have no real desire to return to this after listening 3 times.
People seem to dislike The Blood Album, but I still return to 3-4 tracks from it years later.

i thought this was at least more consistent than blood but bloods peaks are def higher (hidden knives, feed from the floor, she speaks the language)

I definitely think Blood is better.
Also, you forgot Pink Eyes. Best song on that album for me.

Have yet to figure out exactly why, but Blood does absolutely nothing for me and I definitely enjoy this more. With that said, this is still a disappointment and I don’t see myself returning to this one much either. I think this one has bigger highs than Blood and significantly less lows... both albums just feel so neutered and safe. This is sitting around a 3.2 for me.

This is shit, period.

the best tracks on this and the best tracks on Blood are all about as good as each other (Dark Snow, Pink Eyes, She Speaks The Language, Still a Stranger, No Eyes, Escape From LA, Twisted Tongues, Tied To A Tree). could see them all in the same tier on a tier list
Break Angels and Back Into The Sun remain my favorite AFI tracks of their recent releases. Both are just some of my all time favorites by this band in general

I wish I liked this more (look at Storm with the 4.5, i'm jelli : /). the band seems so proud of it (like every band does after a new release but still) but it falls short (literally) in so many areas

The best thing I can say is that I love how short it is. It will make it easy to revisit to see if I’ve misjudged it.

After a couple of spins, not much is sticking with me besides Twisting Tongues.
They really got my hopes up with that as the first single lol

i'm never going to not be sad that the rest of this album sounds almost completely removed from Twisted Tongues.

wow, if only someone had a cool new list talking about what they would do to improve this album. sounds like it would be a fun discussion starter. if it yano...existed.

Interesting hypothetical, dude. I shall have fun imagining what such a thread would be like in some possible world.

A lot of these songs are ear worms. I was playing On Your Back earlier, then not long after I found my wife humming the chorus haha. Lots of parts of various songs will get stuck in my head. It's certainly a catchy album, despite its various flaws. The 36 min run time helps with that.
I was reading an old article the other day about shortened song lengths because of streaming services, and I started to wonder if that had something to do with the writing process for Bodies: https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/28/18642978/music-streaming-spotify-song-length-distribution-production-switched-on-pop-vergecast-interview

Shorter songs = more streams = more revenue
Unfortunate reality.

Yeah, I can't fault any musician for catering song lengths to streaming services but that is indeed very unfortunate.
