Kid A eerie vibes is pretty much spot on. Just mix it with more electronic and drone influences and I think that's a pretty apt starting point for describing this album.

some of the oppressive bits on the half of this i was awake for remind me of some of the denser bits on Mango Negro and now I'm happy because I have a good reason to listen to more long bois

not so sure about the Kid A parallels; that alb has a much more evasive/delicate/idk sense of space that I'm not getting (or particularly craving) here

"pretentiously long"

lol. all music that doesn't cater to either commute lengths or lunch breaks is pretentious, musicians have lost touch with the realities of the working boi

I think I'm just trying to compare it to stuff I'm familiar with

Kid A probably isn't the best comparison ever just the closest I can put my finger on out of the album's I've heard

Agreed that Kid A is much more delicate and evasive; this is more momentous and at times almost soundtrack-like (?), only with far more experimentation and general weirdness than any soundtrack I've ever heard

Also, what do you make of the Swans/The Seer vibes, since I'm apparently not alone in drawing that conclusion either

I wish more artists were pretentious. It's more of a plus

Sow there are a lot of substantial differences between them, but it might be worth checking the new Xiu Xiu if you fw this so hard. A lot of the darkwave stuff on that has a similar tone (and those bits are mostly the best cuts), peep Fuzz Gang Fight and you'll get me

I listened to the Xiu Xiu and thought it was pretty good. It lost itself a little too much in its experimentalism and noise for my preference, whereas this one feels a bit more approachable and varied. Disclaimer I only listened to that album once though, so I'll still take your recommendation to listen to it because it might grow on the heels of this record sparking an interest in that style of music. Will also check FGF eventually. Right now I can't tear myself away from this one.

Swans and Radiohead are good reference points.

I do need to revisit it though, I remember certain moments knocked me on my ass especially near the front of the album

Wooh! I don't think you'll regret it to be honest. This is so unique. Definitely feels like the kind of album that will stand out at the end of the year.

Honestly this is the first album in a long time I've seen actually earn its Radiohead comparisons
