hefty bet maybe
okay Rumpus Room is less good than I thought but that's only because Fuzz Gang Fight is phenomenal and comes right after. why is Angela listed as a feature? gonna rejam Forget and reflect on this

The best part of the album comes right after Rumpus Room aye, which does it absolutely no favours. I’m still quite sure it’s not actually a good song mind.

Xiu Xiu and "good song" doesn't square for me somehow. Like so much about this band is rejecting what's conventionally "good". The video for Rumpus Room attests to that pretty well imo

Nah, just because it’s not ‘conventionally good’ doesn’t mean it can’t be actually good. That sounds like an excuse to lavish praise upon some nonsense song-writing choices (which absolutely isn’t always the case with these guys, they have some genuinely great material).

See the thing is you should 4.5 Knife Play
And Johnny Angela’s listed as a feature for Fuzz Gong because that’s how they credited the other half of the duets for the record

‘i listened to knife play again (obv superior) and it makes me feel like i overrated this‘
Obvs yeah. Question is what did you rate The Air Force / Angel Guts? (Knife Play is still numero uno, probably).

@demon if the nonsense songwriting choices end up furthering their overall aesthetic and the aesthetic of the album, I'm probably going to vibe with them as honest artistic choices. I was really into Basket of Fruit for that reason, but I get why so many people hated it, it's borderline unlistenable at times.

Aesthetic is important, sometimes paramount, but the best artists strike a balance.
I’m not actually saying these guys always neglect song-writing in favour of aesthetic, they skirt the edges and maaaaaybe overstep the mark on occasion.
I guess what I’m saying is their best material actually manages to be enjoyable from a song-writing standpoint without neglecting the aesthetics (or most importantly, for me at least, atmosphere).

Most Xiu Xiu records are pretty good on both of those fronts tbh
Like it sometimes feels uncanny in the songwriting when they go off into weird noise chaos, but that's because they'll set up the parameter of a traditional song and then undercut it as they go. This one feels like it holds onto those ideas of existent song structures even more solidly than they usually do

Their best certainly are.
Oh yeah, if anything this one could actually do with being a bit noisier/more chaotic.

so after being here for porc's review, is this a good place to start for Xiu Xiu? that back catalog is too lengthy for me to chrono this time around

Think it makes a pretty interesting intro, especially if you pair it with Knife Play
Not just because they're the discog bookends right now, something about this one for me felt like revisiting some of what they did way back there, in a brand new context
