no Im with you though I kind of forget it since i mostly go to smaller shows and involved in smaller scenes than the wider big band metal community I guess but whenever I attend bigger shows, maybe cos theres support I wanna watch or something ,Im reminded what absolute bell ends chip on the shoulder elitist metallers can be. i know neoliberal is a real term with a long history, but I've really noticed it cropping up this year and I just hate how it's basically become a word used by anti-establishment types on both sides of the isle towards anyone they don't like.

When I say neoliberal, I specifically mean neoliberalism sensu Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, and Ayn Rand.

I used to be an executive of the metalhead club at my university. Was pretty cool, especially when we got to set up booth in the atrium and blast death metal for the whole school lol.



I don't think there is anything wrong with calling yourself a metalhead or expressing it, I think the real problem comes from people who have metal AS their identity. I've met a few people who all they talk about is metal and think everyone who listens to pop is an idiot. They constantly post metal stuff on social media and call everyone else sheep and shit lol.



Me personally I wear band shirts still but mostly like around home or on a weekend. Usually dress business casual just because I like that style. Unfortantely I find if you look 'metal' enough people will think your life revolves around it, which honestly is a really dishonest, bad faith assumption.

I just dress how I dress. I like to dress post punk (basically edgy business casual) with a little band merch sprinkled in and shit. I wear the occasional choker too but it's not always comfy on my neck. I wish my school had a heavy music club. I should've organized more in college and started that shit myself.



But yeah, they don't have particularly great merch unfortunately. I was thinking about getting some of their iconography tattooed but idk when I'll have the cash for that.

Yeah thats what I was saying while usually getting their 'New bands' out of Metal Mainstream press. A lot of them dont dig that far for music just as the people they say get their music through public radio on the way to work etc etc.



As much as I love DSO I wouldnt be comfortable wearing a shirt by them just because of the discussed. I wouldnt give a shit if someone else did either but me personally I wont ever wear one. I also buy all their shit 2nd hand off discogs. I wont support them financially because of their ties with Mikko despite not considering them a Nazi band at all. They also did a split with Clandestine blaze of course. I can separate art from artist but that artist wont see any cash off me either. If i ever DID wear a shirt then yeah it would be off RB or some shit.

I mean everyone ties their identity to hobbies or subcultures - sports fans, gym junkies, yoga mums, gamers etc but I still think it's these people who garner the shit reputation for them



For instance about when Sunbather was released - the people who responded with animosity were the ones who had tied their identities to black metal so took it was interpreted like a personal affront on them, whilst someone like myself who listens to a lot of black metal but just treats it as a hobby like everything else could see it for what it was - experimentation even if I didn't like it (I did)



Or a sports fan who is willing to beat the shit out of an opposing sports fan.



It's natural to do so, and we all do to some extent but I think being as neutral and eclectic as possible makes you a stronger character, contrary to what some people think
