I think this is way funnier and more dynamic than Joy, love it.

There isn't a whole lot of punk dropping this year besides some super underground demos. And mostly just hardcore at that. Pretty lame.

At first I felt a bit indifferent, but right now I'm loving its urgency, almost unrelenting pace and the guitar work in particular.

Agreed on the urgency, it sure is the record's greatest asset. I'm a melody sucker tho, and I fail to remember much of this one as soon as I've finished a listen.

Mr. Motivator is hilariously bad and Anxiety isn't much better... what compelled them to place the two worst tracks back-to-back, so early on? This is mostly just not that interesting, as they have a nasty habit of either repeating sections ad nauseam or shoehorning seemingly random tangents in, usually right at the end of tracks. The balance is wrong. Show me something new, but at least let it play out a little otherwise it comes across as forced.
I've already mentioned how the lyrics irk me somewhat, so I won't go there again... Although I must admit the concept for Model Village is pretty funny and there are a few other decent lines here.

The album's sequencing sure is weird. Also agreed on the balancing, most of their tracks end up becoming tiresome.
IDLES' lyrics are IDLES' lyrics, yup.

this is pretty lazy even by their standards - still probably a 3, idles at their worst is still a pretty fun listen

Well, I’ve read Joe saying they’re not a punk band because that would be disrespectful to other genres that came before punk and were “subversive art” - blues, reaggae, calypso. So, he never said they didn’t have punk or post-punk musical elements to their discography, but the idea of the genre punk ignores other important pre-punk genres: https://www.msn.com/en-nz/entertainment/music/idles-joe-talbot-were-not-a-punk-band/ar-BB16L3Gg

Whenever someone says “we’re not ____ genre” you can almost always instantly assume they are in fact that genre

I get where he's coming from, but it seems like he purposefully forgets they don't sound like blues or reggae. These genres might be enormous influences to them, but nobody would label IDLES as such.
It's not the first nor the last time a band don't want to be labelled with a certain genre - eg 65dos who don't want to be associated with post-rock - but in this case I feel Talbot is more interested in the band's influences than their actual sound. My two cents tho.
