phil is speaking in generalities though. he isn't speaking of his music exclusively: "ideally we can just make stuff without a title". It works fine enough applied to his music but it isn't the case for a lot of artists. things can be enjoyed solely on merit sure but that doesn't mean it's ideal for them to lack an identity.

i haven't dug into the lyrics too much on this thing yet to see how he's applying this to this specific project however

right there he's speaking in general terms, lewis. i don't need to have sat down going over the lyrics on this with a fine-tooth comb to have an opinion on his take on music. he concedes it's impossible but what does that matter? i disagree that it would be "ideal" to make things without titles. i prefer the distinctions and creativity that goes into titles and identities.

eye-catching album titles only really matter from a marketing standpoint anyway, which I’m sure he doesn’t give two fucks about, seeing that it’s one fucking song.

im not gonna say it’s the most incredibly cerebral album title of all time either. It’s a placeholder title that never got changed, which fits well with his “nothing matters” worldview. No need to read more into it.

If you’re worried about the album title, this album is probably not for you lol

Interesting that an album title designed reflect or highlight the benefit of removing labels from art and instead focusing on the art itself has prompted a prolonged discussion about labeling art (rather than a discussion of the art itself). Although to an extent they're one and the same, given that the title reflects the meaning behind the art and therefore in discussing the label we are discussing the art. But still, there is something a little ironic in a meaningless title conveying quite a bit of meaning, and therefore in putting forward the idea that labels are silly the album title demonstrates the value of well thought out labels for art.

Clear Moon is insane. And I’ve heard almost (Still have to hear a few of his smaller Microphones efforts)everything from this guy. Better than any Microphones album by a long shot. Has more atmosphere and grace then I’ve ever heard this man command. Sauna is cool too but very unemotional, and that’s a big problem I have with a lot of why he puts out. Clear Moon is very obvious in tone but also mysterious and beautiful. Like an Ulver album.

I think in a perfect world bands wouldn’t even exist. Music would be made for the collective whole of art, and it wouldn’t be tied to or owned by a specific individual. I believe music is a natural entity, and that when someone “writes” a song, they are simply channeling a feeling or pattern that was already there. To claim it as your own is always ego-driven, like planting a garden and then claiming that you invented the tomatoes you just grew.

But my ideal of “Musical Socialism” is nothing but a utopian fantasy, because how would anyone become aware of new music without a form of capitalism and ego-driven pursuits? Without labels, music becomes chaos, and chaos isn’t art.

Smfh artists already getting fucking rawdogged out of profits on their own music and u want them to give up ownership of their own art entirely

"To claim it as your own is always ego-driven, like planting a garden and then claiming that you invented the tomatoes you just grew."

I couldn’t tell if plane was trolling writing a novel over a title that means literally nothing, either.
