Why am I the only one who absolutely loves the guest vocals on Garden Song

Nah I'm right there with you, I honestly didn't even pay attention to the fact that they were there, it just flowed right along with the music for me

Slex didn't you absolutely hate them like a month ago??
Thanks guys < 3

The low accompanying vocals on Garden Song are one of the few truly interesting elements of this album. But even then, they are a novelty.

This sticks the landing but man I just find her folk songs so dull and samey. Felt the same way on the debut but at least those ones weren't bathed in ambient overproduction. Even the indie rock songs would've been way better with more straightforward instrumentation.

You know what? This review is accurate as FUCK.

Neek's avatar so accurately reflects the tone of this thread, lol.

i like the garden song guest vocal and it’s my favorite of the folk tracks
agree about overproduction, there’s a “best new music” vibe to the whole thing

The album is definitely a textbook 3.5 but the closer alone makes it worth the bump to a 4.

Agree with Point, my biggest issue on the first go is all that overriding ambience and production.

I think the ambience/production is fine, my issue is that so few of the melodies stick.

of course maybe the melodies don't pop like I want them to because of the production or mixing
so round and round we go

"of course maybe the melodies don't pop like I want them to because of the production or mixing"
Yeah this might be it. Imho she's not that great a melodist though ("Motion Sickness" aside); it's a problem a lot of modern folkies have.

i think the buildup to the last song's end is better than the end itself

The build up is excellent but the payoff is glorious. It's just so different and unexpected. To me that's better than the build up and the best part of the entire album - never saw screams on a Bridgers song coming. Had it been replaced by a guitar solo or something I might agree about the build up being the best part but nah - nothing quite like the moment it erupts.

Some very bad takes going on here

With that said the two depend on each other. The crescendo wouldn't be what it is without the tension building and vise versa.

Absolutely, a huge problem I have with this record is that the melodies just seem like autopilot generic Phoebe Bridgers melodies.
Smoke Signals has incredible melodies though to be fair.

The only melodies that don't really stand out to me are on "Halloween" or "Garden Song," every other song on here has gotten stuck in my head at some point so idk what y'all are talking about
can we talk about how much better the pacing is here than on Stranger?
