Now that I can listen to the album somewhere other than in short drives in my car, I'm making a solid push through it. I'm on Billy Stay now which seems nice so far. Oklahoma City was really pretty and Whiskey Fever was a little yee-haw but I did love the rougher edge to his vocals (and, for that matter, they're a lot of that across these songs which I'm really enjoying).

The Good I'll Do and Someday (Maggie's) are both so gorgeous...ugh.

omg If She Wants a Cowboy is hilarious. Knowing him, that autotune is definitely satire and the way he shouts "throw it on the damn radio"...dead lmao

And I still recall the night you're heading home

You were fighting so hard I knew you couldn't be alone

Your hand in my hand, I knew I had to be a man from that night on

And I'll tell you all these stories one day

And we'll laugh like we used to and waste the night away

You'll say, "Boy, how I've missed ya," but son, I was with you this whole time

Goddamn. I'm not crying...you're crying.

Just finished. Some of ya'll are really in for it with that last track. So many gutwrenching pieces on this one, but that poem's one of the best.

American Heartbreak is probably better than Elisabeth, at least from a sonic perspective. Somehow even at 34 tracks the thing never really gets old and it always feels like you're just 1 or 2 songs away from an absolute stunner, or a tearjerker, or a lyrical masterpiece of some kind. I'm gonna be listening to it for a long, long time (and not just because it's really long, haha). I don't know if it will ever mean more to me than Elisabeth, but this has an outside shot of matching it, which is amazing in itself.

I’ll try to get to it and do at least one full uninterrupted listen.

It may actually be more digestible if you break it up; I heard this over the course of (1) a 20 minute morning commute, (2) a 10 minute lunch drive, (3) a 20 minute afternoon commute, then finally the remaining hour and 10 mins at night. I honestly can't say if I would have tired of it had I tried to take it all in at once, but it's definitely more diverse stylistically and tempo-wise than I expected it to be based on DeAnn and Elisabeth.

I split it up into 2 (an hour last night and an hour this morning), then I tackled it all in one listening today, and I didn't get tired of it surprisingly

it's very well rounded and has just enough sonic diversity between tracks that it really brings something new with each track

I was adding the songs that I deemed "the better ones" as I listened to all 34 tracks and I ended up with a 30 track playlist so I just deleted it.

I think The Outskirts is my early favorite though. For some reason I love the way he sings "your smile outdoes the dawn".

Got all the way through this once and the whole thing is just solid front to back. Might need to break it into smaller pieces to digest it better, but I see tracks from this popping up in my listening all summer.
