Emerald surprisingly grew into my favourite, maybe behind Marian. those are the two I spin most by far

Just relistened to "Emerald", it's indeed a beaut. "Marian" still is #1 though, but damn this album is a grower

this is by far his best work imo which is a significant thing for a man with LOSE and Why There Are Mountains in his rearview

I'm not super big into his Cymbals stuff. How does it compare/sound to this one?
|

Much different sound here than Cymbals

Cymbals' career kinda feels like a slow march towards Joe learning how to write melody- and hook-forward in retrospect. it's a huge change from Why There Are Mountains in all its "we really like Modest Mouse" freewheeling to Pretty Years which is for all intents and purposes an indie pop album. LOSE being their best because its right in the middle of those two styles in a really satisfying way
but this strikes me as taking all the lessons he learned writing melody and applying it to much stronger music than Pretty Years had. perfect mix of hooks and experimentation on here, and his lyrics have never been better
